Grotto/Table Mountain (Sport & Top Rope - Intermediate)

Hey Guys.

Let's get some sport/tr & trad climbing in the Grotto in Sonora, CA area (on the way to Yosemite so 2 hr & 20 mins from South Bay). This will be mostly lead climbing (mostly intermediate to advanced but TR routes for some intermediate folks so we will set up ropes).
After driving through some dirt roads, cows, rusty fences & 20 minutes along a path (& hopefully not walking through any poison oak) you will come into this cavelike structure with geological formations that are called Basalt Columnar created from lava falls. Hues of orange, rust, purple. They look like colors on a crab's pinchers. The columns look Roman-like. On opposing side of Grotto are these alien-like rocks with amazing jugs & holds.

What do you need?
*Climbing gear, helmet, tape for you hands
*Snacks & lots of water
*technu or any poison oak preventative
*Sunscreen
*A desire for safe fun.
*Maybe warm on approach so dress cool. New Lake Melones is nearby so maybe we can jump in after climb

Getting There
Table Mountain is a ways east of the Bay Area, but it kicks ass none-the-less. From the Bay Area, head like you're going to Yosemite; 580 east to 205 east to 5 north for a mile, then 120 east. A while after Oakdale, go straight on 108 where 120 goes right. At Jamestown take a left on Rawhide Road (there's a stop light) go over the narrow bridge and continue on Rawhide for 1.9 miles, then make a sharp left onto Shell Road. Shell Road turns into a dirt road at a gate 1.5 miles down road. At this point you're probably going to want a high clearance vehicle, or to just hike it.
Open a closed gate at the presumed end of the road, drive through, close the gate, and drive (carefully, you're on private property) over some rough road. Continue onwards to a second gate (which is sometimes closed, sometimes open) and pass through. Parking is between this gate and the final (semi-permanently) locked gate.

Meeting place:
http://goo.gl/maps/4XcT0
We can meet at the first parking area just before the gate (see the upper pointer on the maps). 4WD or high clearance vehicle can make it to the further parking area, but a little bit of hiking doesn't hurt. We will meet there between 9:00 and 9:15am. To be fair to those who shows up on time, we won't wait if you are late, unless you let us know ahead of time. When in doubt, we will be at the Grotto Lower Main Wall (where the basalt columns are) or further to the left over the hump (Eastern Front)
Carpools are suggested. The road to the parking locale is a bit treacherous so a rugged car is recommended (SUV, AWD) as car will go across potholes, bump, maybe bottom out and get dirty. :)
Questions? suggestions?

So who is still going from the south or east bay? I'm happy to give rides up there but we would need to make plans for the final approach since it sounds like my car is not going to be up to the task.

    • Michael D.

After 2nd gate one can park on left-hand side before first major pothole and where road divides then like Jared says pile into someone's car. Cozy :)

      1 · August 14, 2013

    • Simon J.

Still got plenty of seats heading there from the south bay if anyone needs it. Otherwise I will see you guys at 10.30 by the second gate. See ya then!

    • Nicholas L.

John, I just moved to the Bay Area and I'm down to go this weekend. Not sure if this is is a no-no but I can't see why. I am an experienced sport climber and have a full sport rack and car. Let me know if you want to carpool out there this weekend. -Nick

Just got bumped up from the wait list, but decided to remove my name after checking the weather. Too hot for me, although the spot looks awesome. Enjoy!

Was coming down on the Palisade glacier and a rock slid and hit my leg. Its not too bad, but will need a couple of weeks to recover.

Sure do Jason! Do you live in SF?

      August 13, 2013

    • Ari

Looks like I just got confirmed in and could use a ride from SF. Is there still one?

      August 13, 2013

  • Michael D.

Ropes and gear: I have a rope, Jared has 1, Kevin. I think you have one right? Simon has one, Pushkar has one, Kamil has one and Jason. & Ruth have 1. that is 7 or 8 ropes work :) Anyone else? Simon, Pushkar, Deepak & kamil live near each other. Maybe you can carpool? Hanna, Elena, Ruth, Kao, Jason and I live in SF so maybe we can carpool in 2 cars. Will save gas costs :) So what do you guys think? lets get cracking.

    August 12, 2013

    • Jared D.

to everyone, bring your trad gear if you have it. There are a few routes that need it.

      1 · August 13, 2013

    • Ruth H.

I am happy to bring my trad gear

      1 · August 13, 2013

Hey guys. it is going to be 94 at the grotto on Saturday and my experience with the approach/hike and climbing was pretty miserable so we can press on and endure the heat or seek out a cooler climate like Castle Rock park, Mickeys Beach or Ring Mountain in Tiburon? what do you think?

    August 12, 2013

    • Jared D.

It's basically the same as big chief, but shorter. There are more issues with the road itself though. There are def more huge pot holes, which are deep and ruts in the road.
I haven't been up there in about 4 months, so it could be worse than it was.

      August 13, 2013

    • Jared D.

You could always leave your car at the first gate, then just ride in with someone else

Chickening out but definitely planning a fall visit.

Hey can we go to eat afterwards in Jamestown as we are so close to it.

    1 · July 25, 2013

    • Jared D.

They have an amazing breakfast place in Jamestown... There dinner choices are slim though

      1 · July 25, 2013

  • Jared D.

This is one of my favorite places to climb. My first outdoor leading and trad were both here. Hitting up Welcome Wall on the way out is highly recommended! Don't forget about A/C Devil Dog!

Speaking of frying, do you think Aug may be too hot? Although it is in a pit protected from sun somewhat, I may opt out for higher elevation till later in the year.

    July 12, 2013

    • Michael D.

The approach will be warm but in the pit it has been nice and cool. I am willing to push this through provided we have cars that can get through the potholes. Stuart put on a bonnet, get some sunscreen and carry a cammesole. you will be fine :) ill even bring a mister to spray us when hot..

      July 12, 2013

  • Cheryl

What's the date? I've been wanting to go to the Grotto for some time, but I'm VERY limited with the dates I'm available. Let me know ASAP so I know if I should drop to let other people take my place.

    July 11, 2013

You're not one of *these* people, are you? :)
