Let's get some sport/tr & trad climbing in the Grotto in Sonora, CA area (on the way to Yosemite so 2 hr & 20 mins from South Bay). This will be mostly lead climbing (mostly intermediate to advanced but TR routes for some intermediate folks so we will set up ropes).
After driving through some dirt roads, cows, rusty fences & 20 minutes along a path (& hopefully not walking through any poison oak) you will come into this cavelike structure with geological formations that are called Basalt Columnar created from lava falls. Hues of orange, rust, purple. They look like colors on a crab's pinchers. The columns look Roman-like. On opposing side of Grotto are these alien-like rocks with amazing jugs & holds.
What do you need?
*Climbing gear, helmet, tape for you hands
*Snacks & lots of water
*technu or any poison oak preventative
*A desire for safe fun.
*Maybe warm on approach so dress cool. New Lake Melones is nearby so maybe we can jump in after climb
Table Mountain is a ways east of the Bay Area, but it kicks ass none-the-less. From the Bay Area, head like you're going to Yosemite; 580 east to 205 east to 5 north for a mile, then 120 east. A while after Oakdale, go straight on 108 where 120 goes right. At Jamestown take a left on Rawhide Road (there's a stop light) go over the narrow bridge and continue on Rawhide for 1.9 miles, then make a sharp left onto Shell Road. Shell Road turns into a dirt road at a gate 1.5 miles down road. At this point you're probably going to want a high clearance vehicle, or to just hike it.
Open a closed gate at the presumed end of the road, drive through, close the gate, and drive (carefully, you're on private property) over some rough road. Continue onwards to a second gate (which is sometimes closed, sometimes open) and pass through. Parking is between this gate and the final (semi-permanently) locked gate.
We can meet at the first parking area just before the gate (see the upper pointer on the maps). 4WD or high clearance vehicle can make it to the further parking area, but a little bit of hiking doesn't hurt. We will meet there between 9:00 and 9:15am. To be fair to those who shows up on time, we won't wait if you are late, unless you let us know ahead of time. When in doubt, we will be at the Grotto Lower Main Wall (where the basalt columns are) or further to the left over the hump (Eastern Front)
Carpools are suggested. The road to the parking locale is a bit treacherous so a rugged car is recommended (SUV, AWD) as car will go across potholes, bump, maybe bottom out and get dirty. :)
