Sunday@Mt.Diablo:Sport/TR Amazing Face(5.9/10a)& other 9's/10's in the area.

This is a heavily traveled area by climbers and the sandstone rock is ever degrading.  Amazing Face (90') is the most well known.  It's a Classic that has become more difficult because the features have been sanded off by climbers.  It was originally 5.7 and 5 stars but now it is becoming accepted as a 10a with only 3 stars.

None the less, I'm just getting started on outdoor lead and I feel comfortable with Amazing face because I top roped it last month.  It's like the gym in that you can have clean/fun falls on this 90' vertical face.  Please be lead climb/belay certified or equivalent.

I have a rope and anchor.  If you RSVP this meetup, indicate your general location for carpooling considerations and whether you can provide a rope/anchor.  You will need to bring a lunch and a lot of water.  Poison Oak is prevalent but easy to avoid and combat if you talk to me about it.  Trust me, I have a life long understanding of poison oak :)

As a reminder, please read again the GYCO helmet policy and liability waiver:

We strongly recommend you wear a helmet while climbing on a GYCO meetup. If you arrive at a GYCO outdoor climbing trip without a climbing helmet or are unable to borrow one from a peer, you may be asked to clear the climbing area or leave the meetup by your organizer should any safety issues occur. This policy is put in place to reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others from falling rocks and climbing gear so please respect your organizer, meetup participants and GYCO's safety policy.

Please text or call me @[masked] if you find yourself running late. The hike is not far. So, if reception is good we can send a runner to get you when you arrive. See you at 8:30 in the parking lot. This is going to be a blast! Cheers! :)

Oh, and if you venture up to Amazing Face alone and see others there but not GYCO, it's because we're on the backside (while waiting for AF). The important thing to remember is to go up around the right side and not down/up the left side or you'll be in for a major hike! Made that mistake :)

      Anchoring gear obtained

      1 · August 23, 2013

    Ok so far we have:
    Simon-anchoring, anchor gear and rope
    David-rope/draws
    Brian-rope/draws
    Lily-anchoring, anchor gear
    Myself-anchor gear and rope

I hear people say a rope for every two people. But that might be in case a rope provider backs out. It seems like three per rope works better. So we're covered currently as long as no one backs out with their gear.
We'll need extra and long slings to protect the sandstone. I understand that careless top ropers are ruining the rock.

FYI I will need to leave by 3pm in order to make an appointment in San Francisco. The group will lose one rope/anchor and two people at that time.

That should be fine , unless you have to drive straight to the city.

Google maps suggests it will take 45 minutes from Ashby. Do you think that is realistic with traffic? If so I guess aim to get to Ashby for 7:45am?

    Gettin totally stoked for this!!!

Here's the exact directions. You will have to scroll down 2/3's of the way to find Amazing Face. As it says, there's a $10 per car day use fee which why it's nice to have generous passengers :)

    Hello Group,
There's plenty to climb but we will remain at 12 Peeps :)
    Looking forward to meeting you,

I am not lead certified, but I am top rope belay certified - is that okay? I do have lead climbing experience but I guessing that is irrelevant.

I have a rope and a set of quickdraws but no anchor-building gear. [masked]

Thanks for setting this up Steve! Looking forward to climbing again.

I have a 60 meter rope and 6 draws. I'll be heading up from downtown San Jose and can fit 5 (4 comfortably).

    August 18, 2013

    • Steve L.

Do you have room for another, Brian? Btw, we can pool our quick draws. I believe I counted 11 bolts on Amazing Face :)

      August 18, 2013

      Yeah definitely!
