Get Outside: Intro to Toproping

Offered in September, this meetup was a great success and so we set this up for October as well!
Let's spend a weekend learning about climbing outdoors and get on easy terrain in the cool air of the mountains, letting everyone get comfortable with granite crack and face (beginner level, 4th class and 5.4 up to 5.8).

Bring food and sleeping gear and your personal climbing gear and we can have a great two days of learning about movement, technique, and some introductions to outdoor safety and fun. We'll learn about gear and toproping basics, anchors, and the differences and similarities between indoor and outdoor climbing, setting you up for success to SAFELY climb on the rock that is so abundant here in northern California.

We can sleep under the stars or inside the lodge at Camp Winton on the Bear River Reservoir. We will have access to running water, electricity, and basic kitchen appliances- refrigerator, sink, and a microwave.

The drive in to camp is on a dirt road (Forest Service road 8N03J) that most 2WD cars can make but not all, please use your discretion.

Bring harness, shoes, helmet, and any other gear that you have (rope, nuts, cams, slings, etc).

What an awesome weekend. I learnt sooo much. Thanks a lot @Tim for all the knowledge and also allowing us to play with all your gear! The place was just amazing. Let me know when you go out doing "Beginner's stuff" and I will join you :-)

I had so much fun with all of you - @Angel, @Gil, @Ankit. Lets get climbing :-)

Directions for those who prefer words (sorry I didn't do this until someone asked):
    1. Drive Highway 88 until mile marker 51.5 in Amador County, 5+ miles past Ham's Station.
    2. Turn right down Bear River Road, drive down about 3 miles.
    3. Cross the dam, and keep following the road. Drive about 1 mile along the lakeside, the road begins to rise away from the lakeside.
    4. Turn left on the first DIRT road on your left (8N03J) with a green gate (just past the paved road, which is a campground).
    5. Continue carefully down the dirt road to the lodge. Park in front of the lodge!

    Question:
    1. What's the food situation? Is it BYOB? Anyone bringing a stove?
    2. Do we wanna see if we have enough gears? For example, me and my friends are going to rent harness and shoes, and may potentially rent other stuff too if we are low on gears.
    3. Just to clarify, if we choose to camp indoors, no tents needed, correct?

    October 11, 2013

    • Tim C.

Please bring your own food, maybe enough to share around. We do have a refrigerator and microwave and stove and pots, so food and plate and silverware is what you need. You do not need a tent, but we will be sleeping on the floor so a pad and sleeping bag are wise.

Also, im a bit worried about finding people without cell reception. Can anyone (or at least leader/organizer) post their car description? Color, brand, size, license # etc.

There will not be any other people around the facility, but you can look for my red Subaru Impreza at the lodge of Camp Winton

One last question, is the climbing site far from Bear River Reservoir? I'm thinking we will go get our rentals on the way out but SB opens at 8am so we might not be able to get there before 10am. If that's the case, how do we find our way to the climbing spot?

    October 11, 2013

    • Tim C.

Just come to the lodge on the road. Read the introduction for road details.

      October 11, 2013

  • Gil S.

Is there a camp site number (sorry if I missed earlier emails).

    October 11, 2013

    • Tim C.

No campsite number. Please just read the introduction for details.

I don't have any ropes to contribute but I will be bringing a camp stove and other cooking utensils (anyone is welcome to use). I will be leaving from Redwood City area and have 1 more spot if anyone needs a ride.

Anyone carpooling from SF? I can potentially drive otherwise. Have 1 60mm rope to bring.

Weather looks good for climbing, cold in the evening (50s and sunny days and 30s at night). Bring jackets and warm sleeping bags- our accommodations are covered but not heated so will be cool. Bring sleeping pads as well, we will be sleeping camping style but indoors. You may sleep outside if you like.

I guess then I am picking everyone up :)
Most likely Arun (my friend) and I will be driving together and picking both of you and meeting rest of the folks at Bear River Reservoir. Can you both please share your pickup location at my gmail id: ankit[dot]dce
FYI I might be out of network on Thursday and Friday, so will be late in replying.

Probably would be a tight fit but is there any chance I can also get a ride? I am in Redwood City but I can meet you wherever it is easiest.

Can't make it anymore, work. Bummer.

    October 9, 2013

  • Tim C.

There is no cell phone reception for the last hour of your drive here, so make sure that you have WRITTEN directions or a map on paper to help guide you!

    October 8, 2013

  • Angel Q.

    That would be great!

    October 6, 2013

  • Joyce Y.

    I'm down

    October 5, 2013

  • Ankit J.

I'll be driving from Santa Clara. If you both don't find a ride, I'll take the SF route and we all can carpool.

    October 2, 2013

  • Angel Q.

I'm in a similar boat (hoping to snag a ride) but I'm in SF.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
