Donner Pass/Big Chief (Trad & Sport. Need 6 Who can lead sport or trad) -Truckee

  • May 2, 2014 · 9:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Hey guys.

Let's do some bad ass trad and sport climbing at Donner pass (truckee) AND big chief (truckee). My fave area for easy trad. 1, 2 to 3 multi pitch routes (school rock, snowshed, peanut gallery & grouse slabs) Or top roping at Green Phantom. See link below for beta.

Things you will need:
*Gear (rope, webbing, draws, shoes, harness, Trad rack if you have it, HELMET etc)
*Food & water (sat day and sun day. we can eat out Sat night)
*sunscreen as needed
*Guide book or map of routes - see below link

Carpools eccouraged - I plan in taking off early Friday so I can up to Truckee early and beat traffic. You are free to come up Fri-Sun or Sat-Sun or one. it's up to you.

Accommodations: Because campsites arent open yet I suggest getting a hotel room at Truckee Hotel: rustic, reasonable, in nice downtown Truckee next to great places to eat, bars & live music.  The hotel rooms have 2 or 3 beds in it so camp out with one another.

As a reminder, please read again the GYCO helmet policy and liability waiver:

We strongly recommend you wear a helmet while climbing on a GYCO meetup. If you arrive at a GYCO outdoor climbing trip without a climbing helmet or are unable to borrow one from a peer, you may be asked to clear the climbing area or leave the meetup by your organizer should any safety issues occur. This policy is put in place to reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others from falling rocks and climbing gear so please respect your organizer, meetup participants and GYCO's safety policy.

Hey guys. Had an awesome time. Despite the bushwaking at Peanut Gallery and lack of sleep. :) You guys rock. I have a lot of photos so if you want to see them add me on Facebook as my photos go from my phone directly there once I take a snapshot and then Ill tag you. Thanks for making what I do worth every moment. I look forward to Big Chief opening up so we can get our sport climb on. Bravo to all those newbies who led today and to those who did some scary and progressive sport leads: Sergey, Wolf, Michael, Adal :)

Any carpools going from SF Friday evening or Saturday any time? I might drive up (disclaimer for potential carpools the sum total of my driving experience is 4 days...) but definitely not on Friday.

    April 27, 2014

    • Gil S.

Yup, that would be great. I'm in SOMA not too far from the freeway entrance. (858)[masked]

Sergey you mentioned you had something Friday night so couldn't join since it appeared we were all leaving Friday but actually that is not accurate. As I mentioned via text Jean and Shari are leaving Saturday from Sf to Truckee so I cannot think of any reason you cant make it so. can you? :)

Hey guys. everyone taken care of? Larry, Wolf and I are leaving between 2:15 made 2:30 so if anyone gets up there at a decent hour tonight text or call me so we can meet for some excellent grub woo hoo :)

    Ropes: Michael D (2), Larry (1), Anthony (if he goes - 1), Adal (1), Wolf (1), Sergey (1), Gil (1), Michael F (1), Kimberly ? Diana?

      I have a rope I can bring!

I will be climbing with you on Saturday as well. I would like to join the trad group. I'll bring gear and a friend. Are you still meeting up between 8 and 9 at cherries cafe?

      May 1, 2014

  • tomw

Hi Everyone. I was planning on climbing at Lover's Leap this weekend with a buddy, but he just told me he might have to cancel. I'm now assessing other options. If my friend bails, can I can join your outing? I have a rack and can bring a rope. I've trad lead up to 5.8, so this setting seems perfect. I love multi-pitch climbs. Carpooling might also be possible; I will leave from Palo Alto after work. Let me know :)

Hi Mike, sorry to double post. Your email first ended up in the spam folder :P. I'll look into lodging. Thanks!

      April 30, 2014

    • Michael D.

      no worries bud :)

      May 1, 2014

  • Michael D.

Okay guys..let's get fired up for Donner.
Who has ropes and gear? Myself (2 ropes), Adrian (1), Sergey (1), Tuan (1), Diana A (1 I think), Alwin (1) anyone else?

Also who has a trad rack or pieces besides me? I intend to do trad Saturday at Donner Pass (Truckee) then Sport Climbing at Big Chief (Truckee) on Sunday provided the fire road entrance to get in is open. I will check and update you all.

As far as lodging since state campsites are not yet open I suggest Hotel Truckee or some other hotel in the general area. All decent OR we can rent a cabin from our Safety guide extraordinaire Richard Bothwell. I think it would be $50 per person night which is way better than a hotel and have a full cabin with all amenities. what do you guys think?

    April 20, 2014

    • Michael D.

book it now MIss Diana :)

    April 30, 2014

    • Michael D.

don't worry. it will be great to meet and climb with ya. we will have plenty of styles of climbing :)

      April 30, 2014

  • Michael D.

    Is everyone set for rides?

    April 30, 2014

  • Michael D.

Hey guys. I plan to leave after 1 on Friday with my pal Larry & pick up Wolf in east bay. We want to beat traffic on 80. We will probably want to have dinner in downtown truckee with whoever comes at a decent hour they have awesome food venues near Hotel Truckee. If we miss you on Friday the plan was to meet @Wild Cherries cafe on Saturday between 8 am & 9. Great coffee, pastries. If we are undecided about whose climbing with who we can partner up over coffee. Right now I know myself, Wolf, Michael F, Adal, Winnie & Anthony (if he goes) think Kimberly too can lead sport/trad so it would be good for us leaders to have safe, reliable followers...someone who knows how to lead belay (which entails catching a fall if need be so experience with that is comforting) & pull out pro (cams and nuts). So if you wanna do trad get a NUT tool from REI ;) If you wanna do sport Sergey and Gill would be added to that list. If you wanna just Top rope that is fine too. All the areas are next to each other

I injured my arm while climbing today, sorry have to sit this one out. It sucks because I just got some awesome shoes!

might be interested in just sat trad leading if anyone is looking for a partner; coming from nearby

    1 · April 28, 2014

    • Michael D.

Come down Anthony. I think Wolf would be a good trad partner since he leads up to 5.9. Pong him. I would but my pal Larry who is coming is my partner.

      April 29, 2014

    • Michael D.

      Ping him no pong. Lol

Hello I need affordable accommodation. Would anyone like to split a room?
I'm also okay with male/female, doesn't have to be weird, it would just be for convenience. (and fun?)

Is anyone interested in camping. That's what I prefer. Can do Fri, Sat nights.

    April 29, 2014

    • Michael D.

Where would you camp? squat of bivvy off main roads or? Only bevause I know the main campsites aren't open yet

      April 29, 2014

  • Michael D.

Does everyone have a ride? is everyone capable of getting their own lodging? I suggest Hotel Truckee downtown in awesome Truckee. Its only 27 to 20 minutes to climb area. Also, we would meet Saturday and sunday between 8 and 9 am at Wild Cherries Cafe. here is address: 11429 Donner Pass Rd, Truckee, CA map: 11429 Donner Pass Rd, Truckee, CA 96161

    Saturday - Donner Pass area
suggested areas would be School rock (easy trad and top roping nearby)- Across the street under a bridge Green Phantom. All TR and one sport lead route. Thinks its 5.11ish), down the road a little is Snowshed (single pitch trad, difficult sport and a few TR routes). Than there is Peanut Gallery, a few difficult sport routes (between 5.10D and above, in upper peanut gallery 2 stuff 5.9 routes and one 5.7 route (TR). At Grouse Slab (behind School rock - single and 2 pitch trad routes) Cont-

    April 25, 2014

    • Michael D.

yes, it has easy trad routes from 5.4 to 5.8, multipitches at School rock. the 2nd pitches you can practically walk up. I need a follower so maybe I can show you placement, rope management and how to build trad anchors using pro.

      Awesome!

Hey Guys. I just got my room at Hotel Truckee. $59 per night for a European Double (share bathroom with neighbor but who cares). Total cost $129. 80. That is a bargain for this rustic hotel. And they have stellar bistro on first floor with cool jazz music, across the street a happening bar (remind me of a bar in SAn Francisco), a block a way amazing mexican food, and 3 breakfast joints. ONe has these homemade donuts and pastries that are out of this world. And a bomb hamburger a few blocks from hotel. The hotel is about 17 to 20 mins from donner pass. GET YOU ROOM NOW before they get sold out: https://www.resontheweb.com/NavigationServlet

    April 28, 2014

  • Kimberley A.

I will join you guys on Saturday. I have a rope and a set of stoppers, may have a set of 6 quickdraws I can borrow too!

    April 25, 2014

    • Michael D.

Kim do you lead trad? curious

      April 28, 2014

  • Michael D.

Hey guys. 2 things. 1) It only appears we have 4 trad leaders: Wolf, myself, Winnie and Gil I think? And am not sure if the rest of you have followed a trad leader but its easy and your basically top roping but the ratio of leaders vs followers or plain top ropers concerns me

    2) Big Chief on Sunday - the awesome sport climbing area - The service gate to get in may be closed still (was closed 2 weeks ago) and I cannot get through to city of Truckee so we may have to do donner pass area. Most people signed up seem to be more top roping and or sport climbing focus which I tried to highlight when I created meetup.

Any chance of doing sport on Saturday?
I can't lead trad and need to be in the bay Sunday so am looking to drive back sat night

    April 20, 2014

    • Michael D.

They have easy top roping at Green Phantom but the sport climbing is pretty difficult at Snowshed and peanut gallery areas fyi

      April 20, 2014

  • Anna

Would you guys mind if Diana and I bring a friend along? She can lead and has personal gear.

    1 · April 20, 2014

    • Michael D.

yes that if one Anna. You might also encourage her to sign up so she is covered from a liability standpoint. when one first signs up the liability piece is last step before joining GYCO. But yes :)

      April 20, 2014

    • Anna

Thanks, Michael :). I'll try to persuade her to join the group.

      April 20, 2014

  • Sergey S.

Not 100% sure I can commit for the weekend... depends on work. Then if I can't it will depend on carpool or if I buy a car by then whether I can get there for one day. Complicated decision tree :) I will vacate the spot if there's waitlist and I'm not sure
