Deep Water Soloing, Canyoneering & Caving in Arizona July 4-6

  • Holiday Inn Fresno Dtwn-Convention Center

1055 Van Ness Ave, Fresno, CA (map)

  • Here’s the plan:

Meet in Fresno 7am on Friday, July 4 (Bay Area people should plan to leave around 4am to be in Fresno by 7am). We’ll all hop on to my truck & on to our first stop, Lava Tube Cave in the Mojave National Preserve (http://www.hikespeak.com/trails/lava-tube-mojave/). We’ll also explore an exposure of Cambrian limestone, the Kelso Dunes, Hole in the Wall, and Cima Dome. Afterwards, we’ll head to our hotel in Phoenix where we’ll stay Friday & Saturday night. Saturday morning, we’ll head to Salome Creek to go canyoneering at ‘The Jug’ (http://arizonahiking.org/component/content/article/82-mogollon-rim/147-salome-creek-the-jug) . Sunday Morning, we’ll head up East Clear Creek for Deep Water Soloing (http://youtu.be/bziqEAoFKTQ). Before we drive back home, we’ll stop by at the Lava River Cave near Flagstaff (http://alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/lava-river-cave)

    Hotel:

I booked a room at Springhill Suites Phoenix at $50/night (discounted rate) which will be $100 for both nights & $20 for each. It’s a suite with 2 queens beds & 1 sofa bed (2 people will share in each queen bed & 1 will be on the sofa bed or I can get another room for you if you want)

    Gear:

For canyoneering, I’ll bring the other gear we will need (static rope, slings, etc.). You should bring your own helmet, harness & rappel device (ATC, pirana, etc.) Optional is a PFD/Life Jacket, gloves & approach shoes. For DWS, bring your climbing shoes. I have a double inflatable kayak so the other 3 will need to bring their own boat. You NEED a wetsuit for canyoneering.

    Carpool:

We need a high clearance vehicle for this trip so we’ll ride in my truck from Fresno & just split gas.

    Note:

Prior Rappelling experience is a must to be considered for this trip. I’m not a guide so everybody is expected to do his/her own research of the trip details. THIS IS NOT A GUIDED TRIP. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY, YOUR OWN GEAR, AND HELPING TO PROVIDE AND/OR CARRY GROUP GEAR.

I'm sorry I have to bail...I've got some shoulder injury sailing so I'm not sure if I can be in shape before next week.

This sounds awesome. How many people are you planning on taking? I have family that live in N. Scottsdale and Cave Creek, so I was wondering how you would feel about me saving the expense of the hotel and just staying with my family at night? I could probably even rent a car for less then staying in the hotel if need be. BTW, I DO have a lot of prior canyoneering experience (though sadly I don't remember how to build the anchor/set rope length...it's been awhile). I have all the necessary gear (except rope). I also have a climbing rope and quick draws (not sure if you're talking trad or sport for the climbing tho). I'm a Bay Arean, btw.

I'm planning on taking 5 (including me). You can stay with your family there if you want & just meet us somewhere on those days. I'll set up anchors & rope.
