  • Hi all

EDIT: How about we leave the Bay Area Thursday, the 25th at noon, get to Yosemite, then either try to get a wilderness permit or set up camp and then wake up at the buttcrack of dawn on Friday and do the snake hike.

We can then take Saturday off and chill, drink some beers, go for a swim or whatnot, and then try to climb the Royal Arches on Sunday.

I'm a decent leader, but I'd feel better if one or two other experienced leaders joined this trip so that we can have a strong group.

    END EDIT

Im considering doing snake dike ( back / slab side of half dome, ~5.7) this fall. Anyone interested? Considering hiring a guide to lead.

    What you need:

*Rope 60 meter, a few cams, webbing, biners etc -read beta in link below

    *Harness/shoes/chalk

*lots of water & food you can carry

*gloves optional for descent down cables

    *walkie Talkies

    *small first aid kit

    Questions?

Sorry, I have to pass out. I am too busy and can't take three days off. Anyway: Enjoy the trip!

Yo! Is everyone who RSVP'd attending? Please update your RSVP if you're not. Also, please comment if you have a rope and/or a rack that you're willing to bring, along with the details (rope thickness and length, what kind of protection you have in your rack).

Finally, I suggest you bring some comfortable slab shoes like La Sportiva Mythos. Your super pointy downturned Evolv Shamans are gonna kill you ;-)

    I can't make the new date :-(

  • Michael D.

Paul, are you still leading this?

    June 24, 2013

    • paul h.

Ok dude, I changed the date so that it doesn't conflict with the holiday and we have more time to do more fun stuff. Can you change the group size to 6 or 8 people though? I'd like a group of 6, but 8 would accomodate the last minute flaking out that usually happens on these trips

      done :)

I'm going to take initiative and add a tentative date. How about we leave the Bay Area at 9am on July 5th, arrive at Yosemite in the afternoon. Then we can get a wilderness permit, hike to the half done, set up camp, and climb this damn thing on Saturday, July 6th.

BTW, I have a Yosemite pass that should be good through July, so whoever rides with me doesn't have to pay.

    • paul h.

Hey Michael, Thanks for the advice about the permit, I'll have to look into it more. In regards to Denise though, is she going on this trip? I feel like I'm missing something

See Denise' note below (or above) :)

Hi Michael - it will totally depend on dates, but I would love to do this again and more than happy to lead. I'd also be interested in doing it by full moon in July or August.. :-)

This meetup is all yours to do whatever you want Denise. :)

I did this in August, its a great climb but a long day. I lead all the pitches, which are all easy, but just keep in mind that the days are now starting to become a lot shorter. Have fun.

I really want to climb snake dike this year. Issue is just find out who wants to run out 100+ ft of 5.4 hehe.

Andrew do you want to lead efforts then here and lead tihs meetup? I wont be joining you as I'm busy producing a GYCO film :)

Unfortunately I do not :( I have actually only climbed indoors and mostly bouldering but REALLY want to try my hand at some real rocks.

I would love to do this. But I can't lead trad. Plus i don't know anything about Snake Dike.

    June 11, 2013

    • Michael D.

have you followed a trad leader? If so what levels have yo followed on? do you know how to lead belay? have you ever caught a fall? if no to all of these chances are this arduous and challenging climb may not be the best intro for a trad meetup

i have sport led 5.10s and can lead belay. I have followed trad on 5.7s in Jtree.

Were thinking of doing this in June Laura.

I'm probably moving out of california in the next few months ;( Thanks for the note though, i'll pass around to a friend who i think might be interested.

    • Michael D.

      did you move?

      June 11, 2013

I'd love to! Hiked Half Dome a couple weeks ago and decided my next trip to the summit would be via chalk and rope rather than cables.

    June 11, 2013

    • Michael D.

very cool. how was it? do you lead trad?

      June 11, 2013

  • josephine

wow! sounds like an amazing trip! how many hours/days does it take? i would love to achieve something of this caliber someday!

    June 11, 2013

  • Michael D.

Laura, are you interested in energizing Snake Dike since you suggested it? Whoever attends this should be a competent trad leader who can endure 100 ft+ runout (which can be a daunting mental trip iof your not 100% confident), who can set up solid anchors, who can endure a 9 hour RT hike/climb, who can carry a 20 to 30 lb pack while you climb. there should be 2 trad leaders and 2 followers (unless you want to add a 3rd team which would be 6 total). Followers should know how to clean gear, lead belay and be able to catch a fall. IF you have basic first aid great but not a requirement. You should invest in walkie talkies. If Laura does not lead this is there any experienced trad leader who is willing to lead?

Hi Laura - I'm definitely interested!

    September 17, 2012

    • Laura R.

Hey Josh - we kind of scrapped the plans for now. I'm going to takea few more classes before going. Will likely shadow a better climber or hire a guide. Let me know where you're at / interested. If there's enough momentum I may be talked into it .. ;)

Awesome! Cool will be in touch

      September 4, 2012

  • Laura R.

Thanks - I've done the hike a couple times so no worries about that. I'm sometimes squeamish about scrambling with a pack, maybe I'll hike up first to check it out or try to find more pix online.

    September 4, 2012

  • David

Laura, you asked about scrambling at the base and the top. Those are both easy areas. Neither gave me any pause. The bigger question is the time commitment and the hike in. We camped at Little Yosemite Valley, which took 4 hrs of moderately steep hiking to get to. Then in the morning it took 1.5 - 2 hrs from the campsite to the base of snake dike. Also snake dike is 8 pitches, which took many hours to do.

    September 4, 2012

  • Michael D.

Laura. I have a few recommendations of people I can connect you to who know Snake Dike well and have done it a few times. Good, safe and awesome trad leaders who you don't have to pay ;) . I'll email you personally

I did this last year. It's a really long day. Definitely only for those that have experience. I'm happy to give some advise,
