Climbing Joshua Tree over Thanksgiving week (TRAD, Some Sport)

Hi climbers!!
I'd like to find a few experienced sport/trad climbers to go to J-Tree with for a week long trip over the TG holidays.

The climbing trip is for intermediate and above craggers who can set up/take down anchors safely, with needed gear, as I plan to trade/switch trad/sport lead turns.

Let me know if anyone's interested in going. Let's discuss more details of camp site/rental car/desired climbs, and etc...

$ in the ballpark:

  • Fights between SF - Palm Springs are found around $300 now.
  • Sharing rent car/s & gas (from bay area / while in J tree)
  • Lodging: $24/person at Black Rock Campgrounds There is water and restroom near by. Please pay $24 to Miki via Paypal.  (note: the climbers dream campground Hidden Valley has no availability for this duration.):
2 sites for the consecutive 8 nights
; checking-in on 17th Sat & checking-out on 25th Sun. - We got two campsites next to each other.
  • National park entrance fee if you don't have a national park pass

It's inconvenient that we cannot upload photo or rate the meetup until the time comes to the end time of the meetup. :-(
Meanwhile, I found the way via 'tools' drop-down to see replies on my questions.

yayyyy - IM glad you figured that out. It appears most had the relevant experience needed to make a rich and successful meetup? :)

I'm still debating with myself.. Bishop or JTree. Can anyone carpool tuesday or early wednesday? I personally love JTree.

    November 19, 2012

    • Michael D.

Hey Tony, there may be spotty service (they may have to check in wifi in Yucca sporadically) but you might contact Miki, the event organizer directly: [masked] By the way, this is a good crew. i know or have climbed with most of them. solid, FUN & SAFE folks :)

    Hi guys,
This is super late request, But I just heard about this from Judit. So if you still accept me I will carpool with Judit arriving wednesday leaving saturday.

    Thanks,

Hi Bernard! If you want to leave earlier than Wednesday, me and Yossi are leaving this Sunday at 8am from SF. Yossi has a big van so you can join us..

I just looked at the campsite info and it says tent only and i was planning on driving my whole house down there (20 ft. long van, not an RV) so, if i can't park on the site, i will not want to drive my van.... I'm guessing that it will actually be ok. can anyone tell me about that?

Hi Yossi, Please call calling[masked] and ask your questions. I think you can park at over flow parking at least.

      November 16, 2012

  • Yossi R.

does anyone know if there's phone reception at the site or the campground???

    November 16, 2012

    • Yossi R.

alright. and looking at the map, it seems like the campground is only 5 miles from the center of Yucca Valley, so Hazel, you should have no problem getting your time on the internet

      November 16, 2012

    • denilou

No reception in the main park, but good reception in town and multiple wifi hotspots including at least 1 Starbucks in town.

Here's info about internet access at JTREE from Denise to share:

We will be going into / through town every evening and morning -- the campground we're in is outside of the main part of the park and we have to go through town to get there. That means we'll have access to stores, internet, restaurants, etc. every morning and every evening. There is at least one Starbucks and undoubtedly several other places with free wifi. I am going to have to check in with work myself a couple of times -- at the very least plug in a Starbucks for a bit on Monday afternoon/evening, and probably once or twice more during the week.

There is no place within the park to get online, so if someone needs to be online mid-day, they will have to have a vehicle to get in/out of the park themselves or arrange with others to only climb a half day or something.

  • Laura R.

Hey - does anyone have portable power / a car converter? I have a little rotisserie that plugs into a wall outlet. If we can run power from someones car/generator, we can all be eating rotisserie turkey / chicken/etc

    1 · November 16, 2012

    • Yossi R.

well, if we drive my van, there's an inverter in it that gives A/C power, so we could plug that in. still not sure (sigh)

Hey all , lookin fwd to meeting / climbing w/u all. I'll be packed up like a sardine w/my dog in a miata, showing up sun nite or mon morning. Will stay thru thurs-ish. Another friend will join as well, though she'll continue onto phoenix thurs. Happy TG! Are we roasting a turkey on the fire??

    November 16, 2012

    • Yossi R.

oh hey there. do you and your dog want to van-pool? i have a big huge van, leaving sunday coming back the following sunday. i have room for your friend too.

      November 16, 2012

    • Laura R.

hey thanks for the offer. We have diverging post TG plans, (she's going to Phoenix, i'm going to Bishop) so we need to drive ourselves. Thanks for the offer though!

      November 16, 2012

  • Yossi R.

THe car-pooling is getting complicated as heck. I understand that Eva and one other person (who is it?) are coming with me... I can't leave on saturday, but i can leave as early as you want on sunday. And Miki is going with 2 others (don't know who)

I have an idea. Why don't we ALL (myself, Miki +2, Eva +1) go in my giant huge van! lets do it! ttys

  • Susanne

    Hi all,
My plan is to drive down there on Thurs, arriving in the evening. Climb Friday and Saturday. Leave Sunday. However, looking at the gdoc, it looks like most of you are leaving on Sat. Will there be anyone climbing on Sat?

Also, my +1/friend isn't sure they are going to be able to make it. So I should have room for someone else in my car. Winnie, did you need a ride down? (Though the hard part is, if I can postpone my Jury Duty, I may not return to the BayArea on Sunday. So someone riding with me may need to hitch a ride with someone else back home.)

    November 15, 2012

    • Michael D.

Susie, I think Miki was (1) looking for a secure ride too or (2) someone to drive with her in her car maybe so she doesnt have to drive alone as our car is too full with gear and 3 people. mayeb email her? im so happy your going and got off the wait list. so awesome :)

Hi Eva, you are in! We just need to figure car-ride metrics. If Yossi's car doesn't get 4 people, either the ppl can accept to pay more for gas per person, or pick another car. Like my car prob takes max 3 ppl, and we'll make it work.

      November 13, 2012

    • Yossi R.

i've just posted on zimride and craigslist for riders down to LA. Those people are probably not gonna have too much gear, so I can fill my van and help pay for gas like that. Then, Eva, you can ride with me or Miki. I would ride with you in Miki's car, but I can't leave until Sunday, so I'll have to make it work with my van. I'll keep you updated

Hey folks, sorry to be a downer, but I have to bail yet again on another climbing trip. My work is just dominating me at the moment, and I will probably have to finish some work this weekend. Not happy.

I'm going to drop out, and pass my spot in the campsite to whoever wants it (talk to Miki, I suppose).

There is still a chance I can organise to have next week off. If I do, then I'll probably try and make it down in a rental car for some climbing on Monday - Wednesday. I'll probably get a hotel room in Joshua Tree or something.

I've got Yossi's number from last week (when I had to bail on the Table Mountain trip), and Pat's number from when we went to Lover's Leap - not sure if the rest of you will get Meetup emails while at camp. Otherwise, I'll just turn up at Black Rock and ask around.

Hi ya all at folks on the waiting list to JTREE meetup,

I just made a friend with climber who gave me her name and info in order to reserve one more camp site, so we can add 5 more folks from the waiting list plus this person whose name is used for the camp site.

As I change the meetup detail, you should receive update of your RSVP status. Please come back to meetup and confirm either you are going or not.

And please give your input on the gdoc:
See you soon at Joshua Tree!!

Getting so excited Miki. Woo hoo :) Does Jtree have a store in surrounding area? I forgot. We did all our shopping in Yucca last year, a little dessert town nearby. :) Eduardo and I plan to cook/grill as needed. i wonder what everybody else is doing? :)

Even better -- hot springs and showers in Desert Hot Springs... About day 3, when you're starting to feel trashed and grimy and tired of being cold in the evenings. :-)

Not much in JTree itself -- Nomad Ventures and a couple of restaurants -- but plenty in Yucca Valley, and the Blackrock campground is out that way, so we'll be going through town each morning/evening.

    November 7, 2012

I'll be bringing a library ;-) And if anyone is still looking for a guidebook or wanting to update their own library, Nomad Ventures is right on the corner when you turn to head into the park. They have a big selection of books, shoes, gear, ropes, and just about anything else you might need.
