Ive been thinking about leading a meetup to Snake Dike. While I don't think im experienced to lead the tecnical climb I can lead the rest. Anyone trad leaders want to lead the technical piece?

    What you will need:
*Harness, shoes, helmet, 6 to 8 slings/draws, 3 to 4 small-medium sized cams, nuts, nut tool
    *Walkie talkies (optional)
    *Food & water
*First aid kit - small optional
*experience following trad, lead belaying and/or trad leading for those intending to lead
*Camping gear (tent, pad, bag, headlamp, etc)
    *Carpools encouraged (2 cars suggested)

    Suggestions? Thoughts?

    Folks,
While the idea of having a meetup do Snake Dike is good, I think in practice its difficult. I did Snake Dike last year and lead all the pitches on this route. I feel that due to the length of the approach and the route, this route is best done in individual groups. Can you imagine 5 parties (from GYCO) lined up at the base to do this route. Assuming you are efficient thats still a delay of 2.5 Hrs (assuming no one else is there). So think about this a bit.
    Cheers,
    Naren

I led pitches 2 and 3 of Snake Dike last spring, then my partner and I bailed for various sound reasons and hiked back after dark. Now I know the approach, which is a time saver! I've debated whether to do the hike again (I've also day hiked Half Dome via the Cables). So maybe I could help with the approach if nobody else signs up that's been there before. I'll keep an eye on this discussion.

June is much better. April could still have snow on the approach and the route. Technical climbing is easy and there aren't many options for placing gear, so not much to worry about there, either. Just make sure you have your runout head on.

Good point Denise. I pushed it back :)

Good point Naren. I forgot that cables dont go up until right before memorial day weekend. Ill push this back until then or June :)

If you're planning to do the whole thing in one day, the moon phase might be worth considering:
      http://lunaf.com/engl...
June 22nd has a full moon (to say nothing of summer solstice daylight ... a whopping 5 more minutes of daylight!).

We just did Snake Dike this last September. A few thoughts:
    1) A heads up if you're thinking you'd follow but not lead this route: I personally thought the approach and "walk-off" were psychologically on-par with the runouts on lead.
    2) No line of sight along the route, lots of wind, and no cell reception 'til the top all combined to make the walkie talkies really useful (especially if you're stretching the rope on the upper pitches).
    3) I brought a couple more cams than supertopo suggested, and this turned out to be a good idea. With natural anchors at the bottom and top of P8, the extra cams came in handy. I also was able to place gear in a couple of sections that supertopo marked as runout.
    4) It's a LONG hike. Start even earlier than you think you should. Don't expect to be as fast as Chris McNamara or some of the guys posting on mountain project :-)
    5) Leave the harness on for the cables and clip in with 2 alpine draws.
    6) The waterfalls are beautiful by moonlight.

If you are going to camp overnight in little yosemite valley, you need to get wilderness permits, which are hard to come by.
Not sure if you need them if you are going to do the climb and hike in one day. (I wouldn't recommend this unless you are a great hiker and climber)

I'm not terribly inclined to do it again, just because of the long hike in, but maybe I'd be tempted.

I agree. I know David Ladawitz and Cameron Saul are familiar with Snake Dike. I added them without their permission to charm them into leading this? :)

I've been thinking about snake dike for a while too. I've heard the approach/route finding is terrible but the climbing is amazing, so it would be great to have at least one person in the group who has done it before. Also it's a pretty long day trip I think so we might need more daylight hours?
