Not for profit 5k/10k/half marathon #1

An informal 5k, 10k and half marathon, a feel-good alternative to some of the events that feel a rip off!

We have measured an accurate course and will record the times for each runner. It won't be an official event, but it will work just as well to let you know how you are progressing, and good timing for those preparing for spring marathons.

There will be a prize for most improved between the Feb and March events.

You can see the route hereIt is all off road on flat runnable country trails. It is simpler than it looks and we will mark it so you don't get lost. The 10k runners will do 2 laps, and the half marathon runners will do 4 laps, plus an extra 1.09k section that we will measure out.

All abilities welcome, this is a timed run, not a race. We can even keep your time private if you prefer.

Please RSVP and donate if you can come.

We will meet at 10, explain the course, get your names and assign numbers, and then get started. Hoe it doesn't rain or the arrows will wash away!

Hope lots of you still coming. I checked the course yesterday and it's spot on for distance.

Hi Viv, I will do my best to make it. I'm in marathon training so this will be great! Will there be 10k and 1/2M? I'd prefer to do the 1/2M if possible!

Great. Yes half will be possible, to make it easier to organise it will be a 4 lap course plus a 1.1k out and back section at the end. All accurately measured. Hope you can make it.

Would prefer a 10k personally, also would be driving to the start. Is there car parking near?

    January 2, 2014

    • viv

Yep sure, there's a car park. I have yet to work out exact course but will definitely be a 10k, possibly also a 20k if there is demand.

Thinking of using the irwell trails for this as good surface and easy to follow. Ill look at some routes when im back in the new year.

Great idea. What about some kind of series? Saturday is not a great day for me, sunday is better.

    December 20, 2013

    • viv

Ill try one in Feb and one in March and if they work well will organise more. Wil leave dates as they are for now but could do Sundays for future ones if preferred.

There is a runners group in Chorlton called Chorlton Runners who I am sure would support the event. I would suggest contacting Tony Payne and letting them know about it. He is fab and I am sure that runners will help support the event!:-0 x

Yes great idea and would love to do it, keep me posted with date, time and location as soon as you know

    December 21, 2013

  • Adel H.

Yes I'll be up for that depending on the location, not particularly mind whether in Feb or March

    November 20, 2013

  • viv

How about 1st Feb and 1st March? Both Sundays.

Interesting idea. I'm usually wary of events with a small field as I have been dead last before (Great Warford 10) and hated it.

Personally I think an event is an event. Yes, with the likes of Bupa and City of MCR you get the big event things like bands stadiums and so on - that all feels amazing, but there is also room for the small local events.

My running club organises a a birthday handicapped 5k every year, its free and not official, but its every much as contested as an official one... I like it being handicapped as it means I am not last!

Im happy to sort a route and prizes if there is enough interest.

Its a bit of work for the organiser. But basically the idea is that you should all finish at the same time.

You submit your 5k PB and from that your start time is calculated. So if the end time is 10am and your pb is 30min you get to set off at 9:30... Pb is 20, you set off at 9:40... And so on.

Sounds great! I'd definitely be up for the 10K. Would also like to try a half marathon (for the first time) but a bit wary about reinjury after a few months of IT band issues. Would be up for helping out/ marshalling etc though if I'm not up to running.
