Special tour of the Green-Wood Cemetery, and have lunch!

Don’t miss one of Green-Wood’s most popular events! This weekend, we’re opening many of our most famous and elaborate mausoleums for public perusal. This special look into Green-Wood’s distinct architecture includes the grand mausoleum of piano maker Henry Engelhard Steinway, the rather unusual tomb of the ultra-wealthy Stephen Whitney, as well as the Catacombs and other unique locations usually closed to visitors.

A new route will be offered each day, and guides and actors in period costume will offer a glimpse into the lives of the people who now rest in these opulent structures.

Trolley will provide “Hop on, hop off” service between 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm on both days.

Single day: $15 for members of Green-Wood, $20 for non-members.

**

Given the above information from the website, I would recommend buying tickets in advance.  Please mention in the comments if you want to meet for lunch first, around 12ish (I'll add specifics as it gets closer, but a pizza place nearby has been recommended), and then we can plan to be at the cemetery by 1.

Hope you all had a great time today. For future ref, believe it or not, not everyone gets emails on a hand-held device. Best to bring a couple of small signs or just make sure that morning that everyone's up to date on any changes. Some of us get the last update on a home computer before leaving for the meet-up. We're here, by the big inside gates, waiting for the trolley. Will get on next trolley.

I'm skipping lunch since no ones posted they'll be there, I'll be inside the gate at 25th just before 1. I have red curly hair, should be easy to spot!

Ok folks, we're on for tomorrow! Please comment here if you're up for lunch!

    looks like Luigi's Pizza on
5th is really close and gets great reviews, http://www.yelp.com/biz/luigis-pizza-brooklyn. We can meet at 12 to eat and then walk down 5th to the park and meet inside at the gate on 25th and 5th, where the tour starts, at 1 pm.

The trolley tour runs in a loop continuously between 12 and 4, you can start and finish at any time, so I picked 1 pm to give us a chance to get lunch. The person I spoke to said there shouldn't be too long of a wait for a trolley at any time.

I note on the Greenwood website that the tour begins at 12 o'clock. What's up with the 1 o'clock meeting time?

I will let you know, as this conflicts with dog walks. I live right by Greenwood,

I'm counting pennies, so probably won't do this one tho the mausoleums sound interesting. But this is an incredibly lush place---spring, summer, fall foliage are a big attraction. I have maps and 2 books on Greenwood if anyone wants to walk there another time.

This is a gorgeous place to walk around with views of Manhattan from the high spots. Not interested in the trolley but if there's a walking tour either day, I'm in. Tours usually cover 1/4 of the cemetery. There's a fabulous Greenwood exhibit at the Museum of the City of NY to 10/13---prints & paintings and exhibits of objects assoc. w/or invented by it's "residents". Nice pre or follow-up to our tour.
