I have been swing dancing since the early 90s. I started my company Get Hep Swing in 1998.
I love doing Lindy Hop, Balboa, Jitterbug, Charleston, Collegiate Shag, West Coast Swing, Hustle, Tango, Carolina Shag ...I love all forms of partnered dancing.
There is no better feeling than dancing with a fun partner to live swing music. I have a huge circle of friends because of swing dancing. Swing dancing is an easy way to get a little more cardio added to your regular work out routine. I also find it really cool that I can travel all over the United States...or the World and I immediately have a group of friends to hang out with because of swing dancing. The swing dancing community is very open and welcoming and no matter where you go you will find a place to go and dance and make new friends.
I love our two monthly dances. We have dances on the second Friday of every month and the last Saturday of every month. The dances always begin with a one hour beginner Jitterbug lesson from 8-9. A live band plays from 9pm until midnight. The dances are $12 per person. $10 for students and seniors with a valid ID. The dances are open to people of all ages and abilities and there is no need to attend with a partner. People are very friendly and everyone dances with everyone. People usually dress casual and comfy. The best shoes to wear are comfortable and not too grippy on the bottom. Drinks and snacks are sold at each dance.
We offer 5 week lessons and specialty workshops at the Brecksville Center for the Arts and other locations. Please check www.gethepswing.com under the lessons and events section for the most up to date information. I also offer private lessons for: $60 an hour for one teacher and 1-2 students. $100 an hour for a teaching couple and 1-4 students.
Hi there! I am Valerie Salstrom and I am the creator and founder of Get Hep Swing. I am a full time professional swing dancer. I teach, compete, perform, choreograph, judge and coach a variety of swing dance forms from the 1920s-1950s.
Best group on Meetup! --- but I kind of have to say that because it is my group! ;)
