GetHiking! at Latta Plantation Nature Preserve

With 16 miles of trail, it's tough to pick a favorite at Latta Plantation. We'll go with a 4.2-mile loop involving three trails that takes in one of the preserve's key natural attributes: a Piedmont prairie. The hike also takes in a stretch of Mountain Island Lake.

I know this week's hikes had a few bumps. With this being a new meetup and having only one organizer who is here in Charlotte (me!), it is taking us a couple tried to figure out the right way to lead this group. As I said on Sunday, if you would like to lead a future hike, please email me at [masked] and we can get that set up. We're going to try to operate the Crowders hike a little bit differently, and see how you guys like it. I'll also go over some more detailed safety information before that hike. Hopefully I'll see everyone out on Saturday!

I hope some other people step up to help you with the hikes, Lindsey. It would be difficult, I'm sure, to lead a group of 50 hikers by yourself!

I had a great time today on the hike. While the wait time at the trail intersection was no fun, it was probably worse for the lady that rolled her ankle at the back of the group. Hope her ankle gets better soon and see you all on the trails.

I totally agree with Cheryl & Kevin Healy about having a leader and a sweeper for different hiking ability. Having moved here recently from DC, we not only would have a leader and a sweeper but three different groups per hiking ability. I, understand, with lack of enough organizers that is not possible but someone in the front and back would be ideal. Not only we had a long wait at one of the crossroads, had no idea which trail to take on but it didn't feel like this was a group activity either. I had 2 hikers in front of me and 2 hikers behind me. We had to keep a constant lookout for the hikers in front of us, so we knew that we were on the right path. I have been hiking for a while with Meetup and this was the first time, it didn't feel like we were part of a group. This was not even a hard trail to hike.

I wouldn't mind hiking at after 11am if its closeby.

I can hike any time on Sundays. If we start doing hikes that are longer or farther from the city, I would expect to have to leave home earlier. I wouldn't mind leaving home as early as 7 AM.

Sadly, I can not make it today. See y'all next week!

I might go on this one, especially if I discover that a Saturday hike I signed up for online, with another hiking group, is actually full.

I might be in too many hiking and walking groups, since I forgot I signed up for a late-a.m. hike with another group. See you next time!

Hey guys! I'll be out leading the hike again this week. I try to answer questions on the comment page as often as I can, but if you have any last minute questions tomorrow, feel free to call my cell phone,[masked]-2661.

A little clarification on where to meet tomorrow: 6211 Sample Rd will take you to the Nature Center. I'll park at the lot down the driveway just past this building, on the right side of the road.

I'm looking forward to seeing everyone out there braving the cold tomorrow! Dress warm!

This is not too far but if anyone would like to carpool from SW Charlotte, south Tryon or south park let me know. I have space for two more..

I'm new to the area and also have no experience with hiking, I hope to learn from everyone! For a first timer, what do you suggest?

Dogs are allowed on all hikes, but park rules require dogs to be on a leash.

Also, if our significant other isn't apart of this group could they tag along too? Thanks!

Question....are these adult only events or can we bring teen children to the hiking events?

    January 20, 2014

    • Lindsey

Of course teens are welcome to join, the more the merrier! We also welcome dogs, as long they are on a leash.

What time exactly we meet and where ? Thank you!

    January 21, 2014

    • Lindsey

The hike will begin at 1:30, so I would recommend arriving a few minutes early. We'll meet at 6211 Sample Road, Huntersville, NC.

Until what time will the hike run? I might be able to join in...

    January 21, 2014

    • Lindsey

Its difficult to tell how long the hike will run, since we pace based on the people in the back of the group. Last week we hiked until about 3. This hike is a little bit longer, so I would expect it to last a little bit longer as well.
