GetHiking! Reedy Creek Nature Preserve

The trail network at Reedy Creek Park serves two functions. Trail on the north side link the park’s various amenities: dog park with ball fields with picnic facilities with playgrounds and camping. Trail on the park’s south side, emanating from the nature center, explores the more pristine parts of the park. On the 4.5-mile circuit we'll be doing, we'll start on the Umbrella Trail and quickly pick up the Big Oak Trail (which might have also been named Big Rock Trail) and quickly escape into maturing Piedmont forest. A good destination is the Robinson Rockhouse Ruins, a decaying example of what constituted elite living in Charlotte in the late 1700s. A return on the Sierra Loop, Sassafras and Dragonfly trails offers more rolling Piedmont exploring.

Mac will be leading this hike.

Thanks for the great hike everyone! I'm glad the weather turned out to be nice, as earlier in the week, it looked like we might have to deal with rain. It was a pleasure meeting everyone and hope to see folks on other hikes in the future!

Hope we don't get rained out!

Hi Denise! The latest weather forecast calls for any rain on Saturday to end about the middle of the day, so by the afternoon we should be OK. I would encourage you (and everyone else) to keep checking the weather forecast and bring a rain jacket on the hike just in case. Mac

Can I get an idea on how long the hike will be and what level? I was thinking of bringing my dog. Thank you!

    February 25, 2014

    • Mac M.

Hi Lisa! The hike is about 4.5 miles long. The trails at Reedy Creek are not strenuous -- I would classify them as easy to moderate. How long it will take depends on your speed, but would estimate between 2 to 3 hours. Again however, it depends on your own pace --some may finish sooner than others, while others will take longer. Finally, you are welcome to bring your dog, but keep in mind that park regulations require that the pet be leashed.

Hello everyone! I'll be leading the hike on Saturday and am looking forward to meeting everyone. As mentioned in the hike description, we'll meet in the parking lot in front of the entrance to the nature center. You are certainly welcome to contact me on my cell phone [masked]) with any questions, and I'll be checking the comments here and respond to them as soon as I can. You can download an excellent trail map of Reedy Creek Nature Preserve from the Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation website. The link below takes you to a site where you can download trail maps for many of the Mecklenburg County Nature Preserves: http://charmeck.org/mecklenburg/county/ParkandRec/StewardshipServices/Pages/Trail%20Maps.aspx

I'll plan to be there on Saturday between 12:15 pm and 12:30 pm on Saturday, and I'll look forward to seeing everyone!

We are looking forward to the hike - approximately how long will we be hiking? We have plans in the evening, so I'm trying to ensure we can do both. Thanks!

There is no was for us to estimate hiking time, since everyone hikes at a different pace and we lead from the back of the group. Average hiking time is 2-3 miles per hour, but some people hike faster and some people hike slower. If you're a fast hiker and you finish early, you're welcome to leave as soon as you get done!

Nice to hear from you that was nice I am not anywhere near there I live near Troutman. A person sure depends on their cars, when you don't have one you are completely stuck! Keeping positive. Have fun on your hike!

I agree, re: being dependent on your car, especially in this area! Good luck with finding a reliable used one. Do you have any guy friends who know cars who might help?
Thanks, re: hike, but I had to change my RSVP, because of a meeting of another group I'm in. I hike/walk with several other groups, so I'm going on one later this week.

I am carless right now, anyone in our group selling a used reliable car???? I am looking. May not be able to get to this hike. Thanks everyone!

Do you live anywhere near Reedy Creek Park, Goldie? There's an Ed's Auto, on Rocky River Rd. that appears to be selling nice-looking used cars.

I just changed my RSVP to no, as a meeting in another local group I'm in was postponed to this day. See you next time!

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
