GetHiking! at Bakers Mountain Park

At 200 acres, Bakers Mountain isn’t big. But it is a great example of a foothills forest. From its 1,780-foot summit, the highest point in Catawba County, a chestnut oak forest spreads below, with the occasional open meadow and a boulder outcrop. The landscape offers a mix of Piedmont and mountain, with mountain laurel, rhododendron Table Mountain and pitch pine, Boynton's Locust, Shiny-leaf Meadowsweet and Heartleaf Wild Ginger. An extensive trail network gives hikers good exposure to the park. This hike is about 6 miles.

Lindsey will be leading this hike.  If you have questions about the hike, you can contact her via email ([masked]) or by phone [masked]).

The people on this hike were great and I enjoyed getting to know them. there is one point with a great view out over a broad valley. There were some significant elevation gains and losses that were not evident on the trail map. They made for some great exercise, but it would have been nice to know about them ahead of time.

Thanks to everyone who came out to make this a great hike! And thank you Andrew for taking the lead!

The hike was well planned and led, with sweep. Great time of year for this, since leaves on trees will block views soon, but I'll have to return to see the laurel and rhododendron blooming...While in the area, check out the other Catawba Co park 20 minutes away: Riverbend Park. Lots of variety and all REALLY moderate, which was a good follow-up to Bakers Mtn. Thanks for the Bakers Mt., Lindsay!

Hey guys! With all the rain we've gotten the last couple of days, and given that there is a stream habitat area along the trail, please come prepared for your feet to get wet/muddy. There is a high of 66 tomorrow in Hickory, so any snow/sleet/ice that's still left along the trail should melt pretty quickly. Looking forward to seeing everyone out there tomorrow!

  • Eileen

Leigh - let's make it 11:15 - according to my GPS it is just over 1-1/2 hours so it is a little different than MapQuest - better safe than sorry

Leigh - Stone Crest is fine - 11:30 by Michael's - I will be driving a red (burgandy) Nissan Rogue - how will I find you? I thought I would park away from the store so there are less cars

    March 6, 2014

    • Eileen

      March 6, 2014

    • Leigh, S.

    March 6, 2014

Can we have a list of the trails we will be hiking. Thanks

    February 26, 2014

    • Lindsey

You got it! I'll post the list of trails later this week or over the weekend.

I posted the list of trails :)

Hey guys! Here are the trails we'll be hiking on Saturday. We'll do 2 loops, both starting from the parking lot. All told, we'll do just over 4 miles of moderate terrain. We will start out on the red trail between the shelter and the park office.
    - First Loop (2.4 miles): we'll take the red loop counter-clockwise from the paved loop, turn right on the yellow spur, then right on the red loop to come back to the paved loop. We'll turn left on the paved loop to get to the second loop.
    - Second Loop (1.7 miles): we'll take the blue trail from the paved loop, turn right on the orange trail, turn right on the blue trail to visit the overlook, then take the blue trail back to the paved loop.
A park map can be found here: http://www.catawbacountync.gov/Parks/bmmap.pdf

Is there a creek or natural water source along the trail? Just trying to gauge how much water to bring for the puppies.

    March 4, 2014

    • Lindsey

There aren't any creeks or streams marked on the park map, so I would plan to bring water.

Hi this will be my first hike with this group - looking forward to it
Am I correct that we are meeting at Bakers Mountain at 1? Is there more than 1 parking area?

    March 3, 2014

    • Lindsey

We will begin the hike at 1p on Sunday, so a lot of people like to arrive a little bit early. But we are meeting at Bakers Mountain, not Charlotte. I can't remember if there is more than one parking area, but it is a fairly small park, so you should be able to find the group. If you have problems, call my cell phone!

Can you tell me more about this hike as far as logistics? Do we meet at the park at 1? Or are we meeting in Charlotte at 1 and them driving there together?

    February 11, 2014

    • Dawn C.

I'm confused. Why would we meet at Stone Mtn when we are hiking Baker's Mountain?

      February 12, 2014

    • Joe M.

Sorry, Bakers Mountain at 1 p.m.

      February 12, 2014

  • Elizabeth S.

Bakers Mtn Park Sat and Riverbend Park Sunday for me. Win/win! Thanks for the Sat catalyst!
