GetHiking! on the MST - Basin Cove to Devil's Garden

May is Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) month, so we'll feature as many hikes as we can on the MST.  We'll start out with 10.4 miles from Basin Cove Overlook to Devil's Garden Overlook.  This is one of the most scenic stretches of the MST, so what better way to start MST month!

We'll leave from the Basin Cove Overlook on the Bluff Mountain Trail.  After 1 mile, we'll pick up the Grassy Gap Trail.  Along the Grassy Gap Trail, we'll have great photo ops at Alligator Back Overlook, a mountain meadow, and Wildcat Rocks Overlook.  Halfway through the hike is a great break at the Bluffs Restaurant and Lodge.  From the Lodge, we'll parallel the Parkway for 0.5 miles before turning right on a faint trail through a meadow.  Cross the Parkway about 0.7 miles later, and travel through a couple of campgrounds before arriving at Brinegar Cabin Historic Site.  The last 2.5 miles of trail go along the Parkway, crossing the road a few times before arriving back at the Devil's Garden Overlook.

The MST is US Forest Service Trail 440, and is always blazed with a white dot.  More information on this section of the MST can be found from the FMST website: http://goo.gl/RVnSxT and http://goo.gl/wRT7re

Note: This hike will require a shuttle.  We'll meet at the end of the hike (Devil's Garden Overlook - on the Blue Ridge Parkway) at 10:30a.  We'll leave half the cars there, and take half the cars to the beginning of the hike (Basin Cove Overlook - on the Blue Ridge Parkway).

Scott will be leading this hike.  His email is [masked], and his phone number is[masked]-2454.  Mark Muzzio will be helping him lead (thanks Mark!)

Enjoyed the hike and and loved the people...and most importantly I will never ever forget to bring a rain poncho again. Dennis, Scott and Daniel were fantastic leaders.

For every ones information. My friend that works on the Blue Ridge Parkway informed me at 10:20 am that the restaurant is still closed.

    May 9

    • Bonnie W.

That's sad news, Dennis! I ate there last several years ago, with friends from NY who were visiting relatives in the area. Such good food and friendly service! Hope they find someone to run the restaurant soon.

Weather update: please pay attention in the morning for decision if it looks like the weather could be bad. We all want to enjoy. Personally rain or shine I say go!! But of course we need to play it safe sometimes. Everyone have a great night!

Hi, all. It looks like Shelley ended up declining this hike. She was travelling with dogs. I'd like to still bring my pup, Hines. Does anyone else have a dog friendly car for the shuttle?

Hello everyone. Sorry for the last minute introduction. My name is Scott. I am a member of the Greatoutdoor Provision Co. in Charlotte NC. I will be hiking with this group for the next couple weeks. Lindsey has told me much about the Hiking group and I look forward to seeing you all in the morning. Looks like the weather is going to hold, as most has already rolled through the area we are hiking tomorrow. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. See you tomorrow.

Did the Bluffs reopen? I'm thinking the Lodge is closed as they can't find anyone to run it. I think restaurant is separate building. I know they were closed during sequester as I was up there.

If it isn't open, we can take a break outside. Its just a good middle point. Most facilities that will be open for the season will be open by mid-May.

The last time my hubby and I were hiking near Sparta, in October, the Bluffs restaurant was closed. Hope it's open again!

Can you tell us what format the coordinates are in? I wanted to make sure I can put them in my Garmin. When I go to mapquest and put in Devil's overlook in sparta it keeps comin up with Hays NC. Any feedback would be great and yes I am directionally challenged so please so not judge..LOL

The easiest way for me to get there is this: take 77 north to exit 83 for US-21N (this will happen near Sparta, its a left exit). After ~18 miles, take the Blue Ridge Parkway southbound (right exit). The parking area will be on the left after ~7 miles. Its REALLY hard to give addresses for GPS for these hikes since there aren't addresses on the BRP.

    • Kevin

Also, if you have the Meetup app on your phone, you can tap on the map and them tap on 'Directions.' It gives you the option to open in Google or Apple Maps. It was not able to locate a route on Google, but it did on the Apple maps.

    what time would we return?

There really is no way to answer that question. Because we are a no-drop group, we hike at the pace of the slowest hiker. Average hiking pace is 2 miles per hour, meaning the hike should take about 5 hours, but could be anywhere from 4 to 6 hours. The hike will start around 11, so we'd finish between 3 and 5. 2.5 hours drive. Beat guess is back in Charlotte around 6:30. But it could be between 5:30 and 7:30.

Hey all! A representative from Friends of the Mountains to Sea trail (FMST) will be joining us on this hike to talk a little about the trail and what FMST does. We'll also have raffle tickets for sale for some pretty awesome prizes in support of MST Month. Raffle tickets will be cash only, so bring cash if its something you might be interested in!

Just bring whatever you like to have on a day hike. It'll be 10 miles, so water and snacks will be important. Keep an eye on the weather and make sure to dress appropriately. There isn't a fee or anything for the hikes.

I would like to bring one of my hiking savvy Aussies with me (always leashed). Just want to be sure dogs aren't an issue with the shuttling of cars

This trail is a little on the long side (just over 10 miles), but nothing too steep or strenuous.
