GetHiking! on the MST - Jumpin Off Rock to Sheets Gap

May is Mountain-to-Sea Trail (MST) Month!  In honor of this, we'll do as many of our May hikes as possible along sections of the MST.  Our second MST hike will be 8 miles from Jumpinoff Rock to Sheets Gap.

This section of trail features the Northwest Trading Post.  This will make a good pitstop for our hike!  This is a nice flat section of the MST, although it is lengthy.  You'll appreciate the flat terrain if you grab a few goodies from the Trading Post!

The MST is always blazed with a white dot, and is trail number 440 on a US Forest Service Map.  More information about this section of the trail is available from the FMST website: http://goo.gl/pYIY7z

A representative from FMST will join us on this hike.  They'll share some information about the trail and what FMST does.  We will also have some raffle tickets for sale with some pretty awesome prizes in support of MST month.  Raffle tickets are cash only, so bring cash if this is something you might be interested in!

Note: this hike will require a shuttle.  We'll meet at the Sheets Cemetery Parking Area (Blue Ridge Parkway MP268) at 1p.  Half of the cars will head to the Jumpinoff Rock Parking area, and we'll leave half at the Cemetery.

Sorry, all. I had a change of plans on Sunday. I really wish I could make it. Have fun!

Okay fellow hikers. I just spoke with this week rep from the FMTS trail. And we will be meeting at the sheets gap overlook at 11 am. This is going to be a nice easy hike but please remember to pack rain gear (just in case this time). Weather looks to be amazing. Dennis has volunteered to help lead. I will spend more time this week with the front of the group. I would still like one more person to volunteer to take a good middle spot in the group. Looking forward to a good turnout and another great hike

      Yes dogs are okay

      May 16, 2014

    • Sheley R.

Kari-I think it would be best not to have 2 dogs who are strangers loose in the back of a car together so may be best to shuttle separate as I have an avalanche and back seat is folded down for my dogs

  • Dennis C.

Sure hope someone can help Elaine out with a ride. It would be nice so she can join us and to meet all of us and enjoy this hike.

    May 16, 2014

  • Lindsey

Also, if anyone can help Elaine out with carpooling that would be awesome! She is having car trouble and needs a ride from the Ballantyne area.

    May 16, 2014

  • Dennis C.

Are we meeting at sheets gap overlook mile post 252 or at the cemetery dirt road which is up from overlook if I remember correctly.

    May 15, 2014

  • Joanne & Ken P.

Holly & Leigh, We can meet at the Target parking lot in Matthews (1900 Matthews Twnshp Pkwy) at 8:30 am. The car can hold 3 in the backseat (the 2 of you & Dana). It's a small car, so it'll be a squeeze if you're okay with that. There are enough seatbelts.

Hey guys, just wanted to pass on that enough people would like to have this hike start earlier. we have decided that this hike will start at 11am. I would also like to find a couple volunteers for this hike to help out with Lead and sweep. This is a 8 mile hike and we spend most of the time on relatively flat land. However we will split the group and will need a lead for both and a sweep for both. Please let me know who has interest for the positions. Shuttle will run at 11:20am sharp. As always check the weather and as we saw last weekend be ready for anything.

    1 · May 13, 2014

    • Lindsey

We will, just haven't had access to computer today. I'll be changed in plenty of time for the hike.

      May 13, 2014

    • Mark M.

      I volunteer to sweep.

      May 14, 2014

  • Dennis C.

Scott ! Dennis cave I will if you need me. Did you get the mail I sent? [masked]

    May 13, 2014

Perfect thank you Dennis. Mail to the shop? Or to me?

      May 13, 2014

    • marie-elena l.

Change in plans......going to drive myself

      May 12, 2014

  • Dennis C.

My friend on the Blue Ridge Parkway told me that the northwest trading post now called Sally Mae's is open 7 days a week 9-5. More information sheets gap mile post is 252.8 and jumping off rock is mile post 260.3. If am not mistaken we will be meeting at sheets gap then shuttle to jumping off rock. Walking sticks and poncho or rain goats are great.

    May 12, 2014

    • Sheley R.

I just heard same about Sally Mae's from an Ashe County friend about 20 min ago

      May 12, 2014

  • Dennis C.

Might suggest we split the group in two might work a little better.

    May 12, 2014

  • Dennis C.

Agree with you Ruth some do hike a little faster then others.

    May 12, 2014

  • -Ruth M

I would enjoy hiking at a pace that allowed tje slower folk to take a bit more of a bteak ) or breaks) along the way.

    May 12, 2014

    • -Ruth M

Don't want to hold the faster folks up. If there are others who would enjoy that, perhaps we could hike the same hik but separarely. If we started earlier, we might end about the same time. Any interest?

      May 12, 2014

  • Dennis C.

Looking for this hike. This is another area I've worked around.

Based on hike today, I respectfully request consideration for hike to begin earlier like 11 or 12 if at all possible.

    1 · May 10, 2014

Thanks Eric! I'm at exit 25 too. I'll meet you wherever it's most convenient for you.

    • Betty T.

OK Jennifer ...but school night...smool nite...just sayin'...get that Camel on and come on!

      May 4, 2014

  • Stacey

About how long should this hike take?

    April 26, 2014

    • Lindsey

Its really tough to answer that question. Since we are a no-drop group, we hike at the pace of the slowest hiker. On average, we hike about 2 miles per hour, so I would say 4 hours. But don't be surprised if this takes anywhere between 3 and 5 hours.

      April 29, 2014

    • Stacey

Ok thanks. That could potentially get me home later than I want to be getting home on a work night. I'll see you all on another hike :)

Lindsey I wanted to know if you were affiliated with this group because I received an email from another group that expressed that this new hiking group in the link was copying hikes from other groups and I also noticed that they have posted this very hike with you as the contact person. I think others were concerned because of potential safety issues, etc.

    April 30, 2014

    • Lindsey

I am not affiliated with that group. It has been brought to my attention and I have emailed that group's organizer and asked him to take that event off his group. We'll see what happens, but in my mind what he's done here isn't ok...
