GetHiking! at Harris Lake County Park

What Harris Lake County Park doesn't have in quantity of hiking trail it more than makes up for in the 6-mile Peninsula Trail. The trail offers great views of the lake, passes through a rare and majestic longleaf pine forest, encompasses a good deal of southern Wake County history and is mostly flat. The combination of distractions and absence of punishing climbs makes this an especially great option for hikers who are looking for a longer hike.

I was part of that trail blazing group! We had no idea how we did it, but we did! I think I surprised everyone with my survivor man/woman cure for seed ticks but I can guarantee that you will be thankful you know the trick if you ever get swarmed by them like I did.

Ummmm, not as easy as eating something. This is a cure if you are out in the woods when you notice them. If you are alone, find some cover, drop the shorts and rub urine over them. They will drop off immediately-and I mean immediately. Otherwise if you have a really, really good friend with you, they can help out. Much easier for men, but when they are swarming you as they were me when I learned this trick, you'll do anything to get them off. Your scotch tape idea sounds good if you only have a small number, I had hundreds on me swarming up my leg.........still gives me the shivers. Hope this helps.

Really nice trails. A few of us apparently found some serious shortcuts - we ended up ahead of the lead group twice even though they had left us in the dust earlier. Joe, thanks for organizing.

Great hike. We've only biked out of Harris County Lake Park. It was a really pretty walk with lots of views of the lake. Thanks, Joe!

Are we meeting at the end of County Park Road or at the mid point of the lot?

If you're interested in carpooling to Harris Lake, a contingent of us will leave from the Cary REI at Walnut and U.S. 1/64 at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. Let me know if you want in on the action (so we we know you're coming and don't leave without you).

Joe - just wondering if all your weekend hikes are going to start at 8am? As it is getting cooler, would you ever consider a 9am or 10am start? I do love hiking but I also love sleeping in :-)

It's funny, but a number of hikers have expressed a similar sentiment (sleeping in — who knew?). We will start later in November, and for our winter session we will likely switch to early afternoon, possibly on Sundays.

This hike was originally scheduled for Sept. 28 — then I found out the park is closed on Sept. 28. Pretty sure the park isn't closed on Oct. 12.
