Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own Tumblr/Wordpress/etc site, but want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? Our HTML & CSS for Beginners class is for you!

We'll explore how to use HTML and CSS to build websites, introduce you to the tools you need for the job and put you on the path of using your new skills to work on more complex applications.

This class will be taught by Lindsey Bieda and Julie Pagano.

This 4-class course runs for four Tuesdays in October:

  • Tuesday, October 2nd 7-9pm
  • Tuesday, October 9th 7-9pm
  • Tuesday, October 16th 7-9pm
  • Tuesday, October 23rd 7-9pm

Due to the restrictions of Meetup's registration, we can't schedule multi-day events, so keep in mind that this Meetup event serves as registration for the entire class.

Please note that classes build upon each other, so it is important to attend all classes.

Students are required to bring their own laptop for classes. If you do not have a laptop, please contact us at [masked] before registering, and we’ll see if we can work something out.

Please install the following prior to the class:

Here is a good collection of web tutorials. They are all CSS3 and HTML 5. There is a good one for buttons and forms here.

At the last class, some people asked about listings of fonts that come with various operating systems. I wasn't able to find a definitive listing, but the two links below have some helpful information. http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html

    Hi Lindsay,
RSVPing and payment for classes cuts off the day before the first class. There is no way for us to have you pay and get in at this point. Additionally, the classes build upon each other and we cannot devote class time to catching up people who missed a class. We will likely repeat this class again some time in the future, so hopefully you can join us then. Thanks,
    - Julie

thanks for the quick reply. I'm bummed but I understand. I didn't even see where I was supposed to register for 10/2. Is there an email list for future events that I could be added to - I want to make sure I don't miss future registration dates.

Meetup is the best place for you to get information about events and other updates for GDI Pittsburgh. We send out regular updates about events and list rsvp dates and other information like that. If you are not getting the emails, you might want to check the email notification settings for your account. We also send out shorter updates via our facebook and twitter accounts, which you can find linked on the meetup page.

I missed the 10/2 class - I have a good understanding of HTML and I know a little CSS - but not much. Could I still attend the rest of the classes? I would really like to improve on CSS and use this as a starting point to learn more programming. Thanks! you can email me [masked] if that is easier.
    Thanks!
    Lindsay

Great! It felt good to get back in the swing of things and strengthen my foundation of HTML knowledge. Its wonderful to get different perspectives and different teaching styles of complex topics such as programing languages!

They started with the basics, and gave us tasks to help us put that into practice. I'm really glad I read through the notes before class, and will spend a lot of time reviewing this weekend.

Hi! I was out of town and missed the cutoff for this. Is there any way I can still sign up? Thanks!

*derp* I didn't sign up Andrea for the class because I'm a bit distractible at times. Is it alright if we (Andrea and I) showed up without the RSVP?

    Apologies :S

    Hi Amy,

I opened the rsvps back up until 11pm Sunday night. Please rsvp asap if you'd still like to join the class. We'd be happy to have you!

Hello, I just saw a flyer for this event today at Starbucks. Looks like RSVPs for this event are now closed. Does that mean that the event registration is now closed? Please let me know if I can still register. I'd be very delighted to do so if I still can!!! Thanks!

    Hi Janine,

The classes and exercises all build on each other, so it would be hard to follow along and stay caught up if you missed a class. I know several other people who could not attend because of conflicts, so we will likely have the class again in a few months.

    Hi Julie,
Thanks for getting back to me. I could install Chrome, but looks like I will have to miss 2nd class. I am disappointed. I was at your mixer last too. Thanks for hosting. It was good. I like what you ladies are doing. I really wish I could take this class NOW!

Looks like I might have to miss 2nd class so probably best not to sign up--huh? Don't suppose you will be having another soon?

    September 28, 2012

  • Julie P.

Hi Janine! We would love to have you join the class. Is it possible for you to install Chrome on your laptop? Our recommendation is to use Chrome for the class, if you can. That's what we will be focusing on when we provide examples and do exercises in class, so it will be easier to follow along if you are using that.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
