Intro to HTML & CSS

Want to learn how to build your own website? Already have your own website but want to have more control over it? Interested in learning to program but want to start small? This class is for you!

We will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily-applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way.

This class takes place over four consecutive Tuesday evenings, as follows:

Tuesday, Feb 4th - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Tuesday, Feb 11th - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Tuesday, Feb 18th - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Tuesday, Feb 25th - 6:30pm to 8:30pm

The cost of the class covers all four classes. Please review our refund policy before committing to this class, as we are unable to offer refunds. Financial aid in the form of scholarships is available, please email the leadership team to request an application.

The course will be taught by Corina Acosta

Corina Acosta loved to code the minute she made a turtle move across the screen with GOTO statements in the 7th grade. Without any female role models to encourage her to focus on computers, her love of code remained dormant while she went on to pursue her love of Dance and Musical Theater. She eventually returned to her love of technology and pursued a B.S. in Computer Science at California State University, Northridge in 2003. She has since developed a career in Web Development spanning over 10 years and is currently part of an innovative team at Berklee Online, the extension school for Berklee College of Music. Corina has a desire to inspire and encourage other women to pursue technology with the hope of closing the gender gap that exists in STEM occupations and education.

Please install the following on your computer prior to class:

• A laptop and charger.

• A code editor installed. (We recommend Notepad++ for Windows and SublimeText or TextWrangler for Mac.)

• A modern browser installed. (We recommend Google Chrome (best) or Mozilla Firefox with the Firebug plugin.)

Please join us for our first Code and Coffee on Thursday, January 30th -  All the details here --->http://www.meetup.com/Girl-Develop-It-Boston/events/162801802/

So sorry I discovered this too late and didn't quite pass the quiz to get into the classes starting March 11. When will you offer this again? Anything I can do to prep to take the March 11 classes?

Hi Ladies! You probably saw the recent posting on the GDI meetup page but our next monthly Code & Coffee event is March 20th and hosted by Yours Truly! Its a fun and relaxed way to put aside some time to your questions from previous class material, discuss general coding topics, share ideas on the right developer tools for the job, and get feedback or help on any current side projects you are working on or wish to start. Hope to see you there!

Check it out and RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/Girl-Develop-It-Boston/events/170234662/ Thanks again for being such a wonderful group. It was such a pleasure to share my knowledge with all of you.

This was a great introduction to HTML & CSS. After the last class, I felt a little overwhelmed & intimidated! But tried the text for the next class anyway. Got a 75% I know that 70% is recommended for the HTML5 and CSS3, however I would love to become more comfortable with the things from this class before making the leap to the next. Other than practicing do you have any recommendations for books to get/review? Or should I wait for the next Intro to HTML & CSS and take the class again?

Hi Erika, So glad you enjoyed Corina's class, she is an amazing teacher! There is a good amount of review in the HTML5/CSS3 class, so I feel confident you would do well if you felt comfortable in the intro class. I do agree with Liz however, that working through Code Academy before the class would be very useful. Code School is also a great option as well: https://www.codeschool.... If you do sign up for the class and find yourself falling behind, I would be happy to setup time to meet with you individually also! :)

Wonderful! Thanks for the tips. Got that book on Amazon (Thank goodness for prime & 2 day shipping!) and started that code academy. Maybe if theres still spots open after I spend a day or two drowning in these things I'll re-take the test for the next class. Maybe it its not so scary?!

Hey Ladies! So excited to resume our class tonight after last weeks crazy weather! We'll be creating brand new exercise files tonight so there is no need to have the old ones ready unless you want to continue working with the content you have already created.

Also, I wanted to share a pretty cool link that consolidates all of the best instructional resources for all things web development, its called Bento: http://www.bentobox.io/

    See you all soon!

Hey there Ladies! Due to the weather, I would like to get a feel for how many of you will have trouble getting to class tonight, for example distance, by car, etc. I would prefer that everyone is safe. Please respond here in the Meetup if possible, or you can email us. Thank you!

For those of you who are fans of the show Madmen, here is the opening credits re-done entirely with CSS! Unfortunately, the theme song is no longer audible on this demo but well, you'll get the idea. Sing along in your head. Click the word "Watch" in the title to start the animation: http://stuffandnonsense.co.uk/content/demo/madmanimation/

And here is a tumblr blog containing alphabet animations done in pure CSS: http://cssaz.tumblr.com/

A little dose of CSS inspiration to get you hyped!

For those who would like a pdf copy of the slides, it is included in the download on the GDI Github page here: https://github.com/girldevelopit/gdi-core-html-css

Hit the "Download ZIP" button to the right of the page and download it to your computer. Unzip the file, and locate the GDIBoulder-HTML/CSS-Session1.pdf and GDIBoulder-HTML/CSS-Session2.pdf. These files encompass the same materials and slides that I am using in class.

At the end of the class, I will provide a pdf of my modified slides containing a list of the useful links and resources I reference in class.

We covered the basics of CSS which can feel like a big leap at first but will make more sense as we move along. It will be great if you work through the slides, play with the exercise, and just let it all sink in. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to email me: [masked]

    Happy Friday!

My apologies for not remembering this person's name, but one of you lovely ladies attending this class asked if a tool existed that would take your copy and convert it to HTML. I found a simple tool online that you can download that does exactly that! https://github.com/tholman/zenpen

I promise I will do my best to remember all of your names by the end of our series!

    See you next class!
