Intro to jQuery

Have you ever wondered how to create a slideshow for your website or add interactivity? In this evening workshop, we will introduce jQuery, the most popular JavaScript library for making webpages interactive and animated!  jQuery is a small but powerful library that is used by companies like Google, Amazon and WordPress and is a must-have for any web developer's toolbox.

What we'll cover:

  • Why use jQuery?
  • JavaScript Basics: variables, functions, where to place our <script>s
  • Downloading & including jQuery
  • the jQuery function and its shorthand, $
  • Selecting/Modifying HTML elements
  • Hiding and revealing elements
  • Fading elements in and out
  • Plugins - what they are & how they help you
  • Query UI widgets

Prerequisites: You should have a solid working knowledge of HTML/CSS. A background in  Javascript wouldn't hurt, but is not required.

You will need:
- Your laptop. A tablet is not a substitute.
- A code editor. We recommend SublimeText (PC/Mac) or Notepad++ (PC).
- A modern browser. We recommend Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox with the Firebug plugin.

Good morning. Thanks for hosting this it was an awesome intro. I liked that it covered getting jQuery and adding it not just using it.

I forgot to check in (I was the last one to arrive, dragging a guitar).

The class was really helpful! I've worked with jquery, but it's been with existing applications and I only knew what I saw in the code other people had. Starting a web page from scratch filled in a lot of gaps for me.

It also showed me I need to get more comfortable and fluent with css. If anyone can recommend a good tutorial for css, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks so much for the class!

I want to try the class, however I wonder if I have enough experience. I have dabbled some in HTML/CSS following Allison's intermediate class, but I have not yet worked with Javascript. Should I garnger more skills before I dive into JQuery?

Hi Kelsey, jQuery becomes even more useful when you have some Javascript knowledge, but this class will be geared towards folks with little-to-no Javascript background. We'll cover the things you'll need to know about Javascript while we learn jQuery. You will need solid knowledge of HTML/CSS, though.

I won't be able to make this. Is there a waitlist? Odd the page in IE doesn't show attendees...

Can you offer more detail on what we'll be doing with it? Coding with it? Adding it to sample pages?

It's currently in progress. Give Karissa a few days and she'll update the description and answer your question.

Hi Randy, I'm still working out the nitty gritty, but we'll have a test page or site that we will be making modifications to. This will include adding jQuery to a page(s), learning & implementing some of the built in methods and properties and looking at some of the prebuilt options, like plugins and UI widgets. I hope this helps!
