Photoshop for Web Design

Photoshop is one of the most popular tools out there for web design. In this course, you'll learn how designers and front-end developers use Photoshop as part of their workflow. If you've ever wondered if you're making the most use of Photoshop when you're designing, or if you're creating files that are optimal for making the transition to development, this course is for you.

In this workshop, we'll cover:

  • Setting up and saving your Photoshop workspace for web work (including units, tools & shortcuts)
  • Tips and tricks for setting up your files for pixel-perfection
  • Organizing your files and working with layers
  • Working with graphics in a way that optimizes "code-ability"
  • Slicing and saving for the web

You'll walk away a Photoshop-for-web-design power-user, with lots of tricks, efficiencies, and shortcuts at your fingertips for your next site project.

This course is open to all proficiency levels - we may reference some basic HTML and CSS concepts but we won't be writing any code. No prior experience with Photoshop is necessary, although this class will still benefit users who are experienced working with Photoshop but not as familiar with using it to design for the web.

Required Software: Photoshop

With a free Creative Cloud membership, you can download a 30-day trial version of Photoshop - https://creative.adobe.com/plans - just make sure you've downloaded (and preferably opened) Photoshop prior to the class so you're certain it's fully installed and working on your computer!

About the Teacher:

She works mostly with WordPress and Shopify - language-wise, that means a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, Liquid, and jQuery. She is also mom to two little boys, a newbie distance runner, and a sometimes blogger.

I thought the class was great! I think in the future it would be awesome if GDI Philly could expand the Ps course offerings. Maybe a class for those who are more trained and another for beginners who still don't fully understand basic tool bar functions (i.e.- me!) :) Overall very informative

Apparently I am on a roll this Friday haha but also I think it would be amazing if there was a class solely on wire framing.. including best ways to organize sites, common practices, basic design principles, etc! Just a thought.

Loved the class, Zoe is amazing. Would have loved to work through some exercises, but all in all very informative. Wish I could attend the project night, but hopefully there will be another.

I totally agree re: exercises - I'll have to work on coming up with some good practice activities for if/when we do it again! Thanks for coming, Sarah!

Turns out I have a nasty cold and don't want to give it to you all. I see there is someone waiting. She can have my spot! How do I transfer the ticket to her?

I have no idea, Jessica - I'll shoot Lisa an email and see if she can help out. Feel better soon!

I'm looking forward to assisting as TA for this class. I have a long experience as a print ad designer and presently am working on a degree in web design.

Is there anything in this course that Adobe Photoshop Elements can't handle, or is full bore Photoshop required?

    July 28, 2013

    • Zoe R.

Hi Robin, I've never used Photoshop Elements so I can't say with 100% certainty. However, my understanding is that it is highly focused on the photo editing piece of things, which is not what we'll be talking about - I imagine it is probably missing some of the tools we'll be covering and it may also have fewer settings that would be useful for web work. All in all, I'd suggest a free Photoshop trial for the class over Photoshop Elements.

Looking forward to seeing you there, Andria! If you think of anything else you particularly want to cover that you may have forgotten to mention in your RSVP, feel free to let me know - I have lots planned but am always open to suggestions as well :)
