JavaScript for Beginners

JavaScript is the world's most popular programming language for a reason -- it's the primary way to build interaction on the web. Learning JavaScript is a logical next step once you've learned HTML/CSS.

Many programming courses end up glossing over some of the tricky words -- 'variable', 'object', 'method' -- this course is especially designed for beginners new to programming concepts, so you'll learn to program with JavaScript. If those words are confusing to you now, no worries! You're exactly who we want to teach.

In this class, we will be covering: basic development concepts, JavaScript, dynamic HTML, and we will touch on the jQuery library. Students will exit this class with a good grasp of basic programming principles and the knowledge of how to manipulate HTML elements.

Prerequisites: We suggest having a working knowledge of HTML as a prerequisite for this course. This course is specifically for beginners and we highly advise experienced developers to not take this class.

The course runs from 9:45am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday with a one-hour lunch break provided each day. (Note: We have a fridge and microwave if you would like to bring your own lunch.)

About the teacher:

Pam Selle decided to work in technology when she realized it's the place where people can create things, share them with each other, and make things better. She began teaching others about technology by introducing seniors to web browsers, and is now happy to share her love of web programming with the members of Girl Develop It, as an instructor for the JavaScript/JQuery courses. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga and rides her bicycle. You can find her on Twitter at @pamasaur.

Tech Requirements:

• Your laptop. (Note: a netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute!)

• A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox and Firebug installed.

• A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 2 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

What specifically are you looking for? A future JavaScript course or a course that will follow up this beginner's course?

Will there be an intermediate level JS class in the near future? I've got the basics, but I'd love to go beyond.

I would be interested in jQuery and app design patterns.

Good question. I'm not exactly sure to be quite honest. I have taken a JavaScript course before, so a beginner level would probably be review for me. I suppose I'm not exactly sure where I would want to go from there.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
