Beyond the Basics of HTML/CSS

This 3 part Beyond the Basics with HTML/CSS course runs on Monday September 30th, Thursday October 3rd and Monday, October 7th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm each night. It is the follow up course to Intro to HTML/CSS.

You took Intro to HTML/CSS, and learned a great foundation...now what? In this class, we'll be building a single-page website with all the new hotness: HTML5 for semantical structure and CSS3 for sweet visual flourishes like gradients, rounded corners, and drop shadows. The latest CSS specification provides advanced selectors, graphical enhancements, and better font support that make our sites more visually appealing without using font image replacement techniques, complex JavaScript, or graphics tools.

We'll also try out some more advanced techniques, like CSS animations and responsive design, and we'll talk about some flashy HTML5 features that do require JavaScript.

To get the most out of this class, you should have a working knowledge of basic HTML and CSS. You may have taken Intro to HTML through Girl Develop It, or maybe you have built a site for fun.

To help you gauge whether or not this class is a good fit given your current skill set, you must take this mandatory quiz. Anything better than 70% should allow you to follow along in the class. A review will be provided before we start the new material and you can view the material from our class on our website (look under the "Intermediate HTML"). If you have additional questions, feel free to post them below.

About Zoe Rooney: Zoe runs a tiny (but growing) front-end web development company focused on working with talented designers to create beautiful, functional websites. She works mostly with WordPress and Shopify - language-wise, that means a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, Liquid, and jQuery. She is also mom to two little boys, a newbie distance runner, and a sometimes blogger.

Tech Requirements:

A new laptop bought within the last 3 years - Note: a netbook or tablet is NOT a substitute!

Google Chrome (or Firefox is ok)

A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 2 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there's an overhead to issuing refunds via Meetup.com and we already offer the workshops at such a low-cost. Missed sessions can be made up if the course is offered again with the same instructor. Please contact the GDI organizer of the event within 24 hours.

I missed the bus heading to the train I need to take in to Philly. I'm going to be about half an hour late and I'm so upset about it! Are there slides or anything that will be posted online that I can get access to? I don't want to disturb the class, so please let me know if there is anything I need to know logistically (ie wifi passwords, etc). Thanks!

    • Kelli M.

Ok thanks! I apologize again in advance.

We'll also definitely have the slides available, if not at class then later (they're on Github)

I'm trying to register for this class but it's asking me my score on the "pre-qualifying quiz." Where is this quiz and how do I take it?

    Thanks!!

Lisa, would you mind letting me know if there is space in the future? I really would love to help!

My Macbook is more than 3 years old (2009), but I think it should be ok. It's running Mountain Lion OSX and I have the newest update of Chrome. Would this be ok for the tech requirements?

    September 9, 2013

    • upma

I don't remember the big cat names for OS versions. I have 10.6.8. Will that suffice? Thanks!

      1 · September 12, 2013

    • Zoe R.

@upma, I think as long as you can run the latest version of Chrome you'll be solid!

I've never been to a meetup before- are there any available outlets at the venue for recharging? I have a newish laptop, but I'm concerned about the battery staying strong for the whole session.

    September 11, 2013

    • Zoe R.

Yes! There are plenty of extension cords and outlets at IndyHall so you can certainly stay plugged in the whole time if you'd like.

  • Amy Q.

Is there an intro class coming soon? I'm not doing too well on the test and I'm realizing my coding skills are really out of date (like 10 years out of date.) Maybe an intro refresher is a good starting point.

    September 6, 2013

    • Amy Q.

I'll definitely sign up for the basic class when it's available. It's probably best that I do that. I could spend time getting up to speed on CSS on my own, but as a working mom it's so hard to find the time!

      September 10, 2013

    • Lisa B.

Hi Amy! We're working on another intro class that will hopefully be scheduled sometime in October. Stay tuned!
