Intro to jQuery

Have you ever wondered how to create a slideshow for your website or add interactivity? In this afternoon workshop, we will introduce jQuery, the most popular JavaScript library for making webpages interactive and animated!  jQuery is a small but powerful library that is used by companies like Google, Amazon and WordPress and on over 65% of the top 10,000 web sites. It is a must-have for any web developer's toolbox.

What we'll cover:
• Why use jQuery?
• Downloading & including jQuery
• The jQuery function and its shorthand, $
• Selecting/Modifying HTML elements
• Hiding , showing, and animating elements
• Plugins - what they are and how they help
• jQuery UI widgets

Prerequisites: Please take this very brief quiz. At the end of the quiz, you will get a completion code that will be requested during class registration.

You need to be familiar with the barest scripting basics (functions, variables, data types). We will cover how these are used in jQuery, but we will not include a full introduction to programming. You should also have a solid working knowledge of HTML and CSS, especially CSS selectors.

You will need:
- Your laptop. A tablet is not a substitute.
- A code editor. We recommend SublimeText (PC/Mac) or Notepad++ (PC).
- A modern browser. We recommend Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox with the Firebug plugin.

About the teacher:

Elise is an engineering director and front-end engineer at Monetate. Her specialties include HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, though she also has experience in PHP, VB, and C#. She has been a volunteer at Girl Develop It for the past year, assisting in numerous classes. She is a musician and operates what her husband refers to as the "gluten-free test kitchen" out of their home. You may have seen her fronting a rock band, presenting at the 2012 Geek Awards, or volunteering at other women-in-tech events around the city. You can connect with her on Twitter at @Not_Pele.

Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there's an overhead to issuing refunds via and we already offer the workshops at such a low-cost. Missed sessions can be made up if the course is offered again with the same instructor. Please contact the GDI organizer of the event within 24 hours at [masked]

I will not be able to make it to tomorrow's class but I hope that you will run this class again in the near future because I am interested and will hope to have another chance at it.

Hi Daniel! Although Girl Develop It courses are open to everyone, we only offer scholarship opportunities for women at this time.
