WordPress 101

This WordPress course runs on Sunday, June 22nd from 9:45am to 4:30pm with a 30-minute break for lunch.

This class is for beginners wanting to learn about using WordPress as a framework and content management system for a blog or website. You can arrive knowing nothing about WordPress and will leave knowing how to start up, build and manage a site.

The first hour of the first class will be a "Happiness Bar" dedicated to installing WordPress on students' hosting accounts. If you already have WordPress installed on a hosting account, or locally on your computer, feel free to arrive at 10:45.

We will cover the following:

• Intro to Wordpress, Installation, SecurityAdministration & Management: You'll learn how to install WordPress, gain an understanding of the admin interface and learn of how to manage site content.

• Widgets, Plugins, Themes & Customizing Themes: You'll learn how to install plugins and themes to add functionality and change the look of your site. You will also learn how to customize themes and theme frameworks.

The last 30 minutes of class will be one-on-one help for individual issues and any WP topics not covered in class.

Prerequisites:

All students MUST come to class with at least a WordPress compatible hosting account, preferably with WordPress already installed. If you do not already have WordPress up and running on your hosting account we will install it for you. We recommend InMotion Hosting who are providing members with a 50% off annual hosting plan at $48 in addition to a 3-month guarantee (if you want to sign up for the class and decide to cancel, they will provide a full refund).

A basic understanding of HTML/CSS, and FTP is helpful, but it is NOT necessary. A follow-up WordPress theming class is currently for Saturday, July 12th and Sunday, July 13th.

About Tracy Levesque, our Instructor:

Tracy Levesque is a co-owner of YIKES, Inc., a Philadelphia web design and development company located in Fishtown. She has been designing websites since 1996 and working with WordPress since 2007. She spends her days building custom themes for WordPress. When not wrangling HTML and CSS, Tracy drinks coffee, chases her 7 year old daughter, plays drums and takes pictures of abandoned buildings.

Thanks so much for attending! I had a good time teaching y'all. Sorry for the wifi slowdown, fortunately I was able to resolve that before the end of class.

People seemed to find it quite valuable (quite a range of experience in the group). A great overview from install to plug-ins.

Here is the Getting ready for class email in case any of you didn't get it. For class you will need a laptop and a sandbox WordPress install. "Sandbox" means an install you are free to play around in (not a live site).

If you have a sandbox account, you can skip the first 45 minutes of class and come at 10:45am.

If not, please come to class at 9:45 with a laptop & a WordPress-compatible hosting account or a local PHP environment (XAMPP, MAMP, WAMP, etc.). The TAs and I will help you get all set up with a WordPress install.

If you do not have a hosting account InMotionHosting is offering GDI students discounted hosting (as low as $3.99/month paid yearly).

    Discount URL: https://secure1.inmotionhosting....

Class will be taking place at First Round Capital - www.firstround.com 4040 Locust Street. It is accessible by SEPTA & there is metered street parking available.

Feel free to post any questions in comments or message me directly.

I'm building landing pages to test ecommerce products and can't decide between using shopify or wordpress. I'm a coding nob - please suggest which platform I should use so I can decide to attend :) thanks

The best person to answer your question is another GDI instructor, Zoe Rooney. She does both WP and Shopify. I'll let her know about your ? and hopefully she'll be able to chime in.

Square seems to be pushing hard to become a contender.

Excited for Sunday! Does anyone know what the parking situation is near First Round Capital?

    June 19

    • Tracy

I know there is plenty of street parking and a lot nearby.

      June 19

    • Yasmine M.

Most street parking right by FRC has a two-hr limit so you'll have to duck out every couple of hours. I recommend looking on Spruce st or parking at the Central Parking lot on 39th and Market. See you Sunday!

Not sure I understand the requirements. Do you need your own laptop for these workshops? Can WordPress be hosted if I have a Go Daddy account?

    June 16

    • Tracy

Hi Susan. Yes, you need to bring a laptop and a WordPress install to play around with to get the most out of class. GoDaddy is not the best for hosting, but we can probably make it work. If you do not have a WordPress install set up you can come to the first hour of class and we will help you get all set up.

Will this class be offered again in the near future? I have a volunteering commitment on the 22nd and won't be able to attend this one.

    June 16

    • Yasmine M.

Hi Sheila - yes, I'm not sure when exactly but likely again in the Fall.

Any opinion on InMotion vs Bluehost?

    June 16

    • Yasmine M.

Hey Aline, it depends on what you're looking for - if you google "InMotion vs Bluehost" you'll find a list of differences. We have partnered with InMotion specifically to offer members a 50% discount off an annual subscription with a money-back guarantee so you can cancel anytime within the first 3 months so you can try WordPress worry-free.
