Pair Programming Workshop

Have you been wanting to carve out some time to practice your HTML/CSS or JavaScript skills, but not sure what to do or where to start? Come out to PairUp Programming and practice coding with the help of a fellow GDI student at your skill level!

For 2 hours you’ll be paired up with a random person to hack on a small project designed to give you some great practice coding in HTML/CSS or Javascript.

There will be three group levels: Level 1 - HTML/CSS,  Level 2 -Basic Javascript, and Level 3 - Advanced Javascript.

We’ll have a list of project ideas available for you to pick from (you can check them out at  www.pairuptocode.com)

The agenda for the night:

6:30pm: Register and get a sticker for your level.

7:00pm: Event starts - Decide what project to work on, using our recommended list or by brainstorming ideas with your partner. Hack on your projects together for the next 2 hours.

9:00pm: Event ends.

Prerequisites:

Please bring a laptop to work on with the following installed:

- A text editor such as Sublime Text 3

- A web browser such as Google Chrome or Firefox

- Also a notebook or sketchbook may be handy for brainstorming ideas with your partner.

About the teacher:

Starting out as a Graphic Designer, Kristi Centinaro was driven to "create things people could interact with", and taught herself how to code after-hours starting in 2008 using online courses, books, and "lots and lots of Google". She now works as a Front-End Engineer, and is passionate about helping others learn how to code and 'career switch' into tech. When she's not building websites or web apps, she freelances as a Concept Artist & Illustrator.

All attendees are expected to abide by the Girl Develop It Code of Conduct.

I joined this group with the intention of mentoring. However, I'm not interested in paying a $20 cover to provide technical expertise. Was this group created with the intention of mentoring? If so how do you plan on gaining mentors if there's a cover for meetups? Generally, the groups I attend are mostly engineers coming together to share experience with one another and are occasionally corporate sponsored one way or another. Please tell me your thoughts.

Hey Sam, we appreciate you wanting to get involved as a volunteer (or TA). Fill out this form and we'll contact you when there's an opportunity: https://docs.google.co.... The group, now at almost 2000 members, was created to provide an affordable, supportive environment to learn how to code with hands-on instruction. This particular event is for those who want to collaborate and practice their skills in a structured format. We were actually looking for TA's for this particular workshop (which will run monthly) earlier today and were able to find someone at the last second. You may also be interested in our Code + Coffee study groups where members come together in an informal setting to share experiences and work on projects. That event is also run monthly and sponsored by local companies. Let me know if you have any other questions. Or you can contact me via email at yasmine at girldevelopit dot com.

Hi! I have limited web programming skills but want to do a few things to the wordpress site I have. Would this class be helpful for that?

    • Kristi C.

Hi Jackie! This workshop is meant to be a sort of 'follow up' to our Intro to HTML/CSS and Intro to JS classes - if you've taken any of those, or feel like you have a foundational understanding of HTML/CSS or JavaScript, then this class is for you! There will be no instruction about how to use these languages - students work on exercises and problem-solve with the help of myself and the TA's. I hope that helps!
