HTML5/CSS3

This HTML5/CSS3 course runs for two days on Saturday, November 3rd and Sunday, November 4th from 1pm to 5pm.

In this class, we'll be building a single-page website (think onepagelove.com) with all the new hotness: HTML5 for structure and CSS3 for sweet visual flourishes like animations, gradients, rounded corners, and drop shadows. I'll show you how easy it is to use web fonts for typography (down with Arial amiright?!). CSS3 provides advanced selectors, graphical enhancements, and better font support that makes our sites more visual appealing without using font image replacement techniques, complex JavaScript, or graphics tools.

To get the most out of this class, you should have a working knowledge of basic HTML and CSS. You may have taken Intro to HTML through Girl Develop It, or you have built a site for fun.

To help you gauge whether or not this class is a good fit given your current skill set, take this quiz. Anything better than 50% should be able to follow along in the class. A review will be provided before we start the new material. If you have additional questions, feel free to post them below.

About the teacher: Allison Wagner is a developer who thrives on transforming smart design work into quality markup and style. Her formal training is in design and advertising. She attended Temple University in Philadelphia, graduating with a BA from the School of Communications. Allison started coding her own designs for the web, and found her true passion within the world of front-end development. As she honed her skills, she garnered a sincere appreciation for standards-based development practices. She's currently a Developer at Happy Cog in Philadelphia.

Tech Requirements:

  1. Your laptop.
  2. A modern browser with either Chrome and the "Web Developer" extension or Firefox andFirebug installed.
  3. A text editor. We recommend Sublime Text 2 (It's free and available for both Mac and PC).

Note: The class is slightly higher in cost compared to the past for 2 reasons. 1) We're trying out a smaller class structure as previous students have suggested and 2) We worked out an agreement with Indyhall which includes a small charge to host our classes so it's easier to find space. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hey everyone, if you tried to join the Study Group and couldn't get in, shoot me an email. I want to try to get everyone in who wants to be there. Also, if you RSVP'd and can't make it, please open up the spot for someone else. I won't be there because I'll be in Costa Rica - have fun!

Excellent program and leadership. I learned a lot but found the nearly constant TA interruption of my process more of an interruption than a help. There were exceptions. Next time I plan to request that I be able to flag for assistance if I want it.

This workshop was fantastic! Allison did a great job presenting the information and was very responsive in adjusting to the needs of the group. While the pace was a bit fast at times, there were several "TA's" there who were really helpful (and insightful!). I'm currently in the MSIS program at Drexel iSchool and I have to say I learned more in these 8 hours of workshop than I've learned in most of of my quarter long graduate courses. I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next workshop, and intend to be a regular! Elise (Elyse?) was particularly helpful when working with us one-on-one. She just has a really good way of breaking down abstract concepts and communicating them to us noobs : )

Hi, any chance that you can fit one more person in your class today?

    November 3, 2012

    • Yasmine M.

Joanne - we're all booked and it would be too tight to cramp someone else. The class will be offered again early next year!

      November 3, 2012

    • Joanne L.

Okay, thanks Yasmine for the prompt reply. I will look for the class again next year.

I scored a 50% on the quiz and really wish signups were still available, but that would mean I would have to cancel my WordCamp registration. Too many good things going on at once.

Given my score do you think I could go right into this course or still take the intro course?

    October 12, 2012

    • Allison W.

Hi Kelsey, I think you'll be fine with 50%. While it sounds like the intro course would be beneficial to you, I don't see anything wrong with diving in to a our 2 day workshop getting familiar "immersion-style" to front-end best practices. Hope this helps, and if you have additional questions let me know!

Thank you Allison! I am going to sign up now :)

I got a 66.67% on the quiz. Does anyone here think I'll have difficulties keeping up?

    October 17, 2012

    • Allison W.

      Hi Shay,
I think you'll be fine with a 66%. If you have basic HTML and CSS skills down (you understand what they are and know a little about how they work in concert to make webpages) I'd say go for it!

I'm very interested in attending this class, but I have a conflict on the 3rd. If you're offering this again, I would love to attend.

    October 16, 2012

    • Yasmine M.

Hey Kelsey - I'll leave it to Allison to answer as she'll know best. She's on vacation and should be back in a few days.

Indyhall and I are going back and forth on dates for this class. I'll keep everyone posted once we have it finalized. The plan is to offer this course, then JavaScript the week after for those that want to continue. Stay tuned!

It's definitely not happening this coming weekend (20/21)

Thanks Yasmine! Looking forward to the new date, whenever it may be :)

I'd like to attend this class. Will registration open up again?

    October 12, 2012

  • Kelley O W.

Is this class still cancelled? Thanks!

    October 10, 2012

  • Sonya

Thanks Yasmine (re: previous response on enrollment). I took the quiz in prep for the class and only did so-so. I think I need the basics. So disappointed that your course this weekend (HTML Intro) was booked. I will definitely be in the next one. Will it be offered again prior to next year? If not, do you know where I may find another course like this over the next few weeks?

    October 7, 2012

Closing registrations to this as the class times will likely change due to a conflict with WordCamp. Stay tuned!

This might be a dumb question but can males go? I have been teaching myself html/css to build phonegap applications and would like some actual instruction if possible.

If I scored a 100% should I skip this class?

      September 27, 2012

Ha, maybe? Feel free to email me alliwag at gmail dot com with some links to work and I'll take a look.

  • Elise

Does this class cover similar materials as the one on Oct 6? thx

    September 26, 2012

    • Allison W.

      Hi Elise,
This class is intended to be a follow-up of sorts to Intro 1, so we'll expand on topics that Jenn covers in that class for sure.
