Introducing Ashley Chapokas, the latest addition to our team + volunteer positions available!

Yasmine M.
Girl Develop It Philly is a little over 2.5 years old and we've grown tremendously, especially the last year. In fact, we've doubled the number of members (111% increase to be more specific) and we've tripled the number of classes and events.
We have a lot of ambitious goals for this year. You may have noticed we've diversified our classes and are partnering with more tech groups to co-organize events. Our other goals for this year are to:

  • Increase the number of members switching from non-tech to tech jobs
  • Increase the number of women attending hackathons/speaking at tech events
  • Run recurring project nights and happy hours to reinforce class material and provide networking opportunities

We'd like to formally welcome GDI member Ashley Chapokas as Lead Volunteer Coordinator who was brought on last month to help us achieve these objectives. Ashley went from being a receptionist to a web developer in a year. Besides taking GDI classes, she hustled by attending hackathons, going to other tech meetups, and by taking online tutorials on her own. She embodies our mission and is a fantastic role model to members who are following a similar path. We're ecstatic she's part of the team. You can learn more about it here and/or follow her on Twitter.

We're looking for more volunteers to help make these goals a possibility. You would be work with Ashley and the rest of the GDI Leadership team, be featured on the national GDI website, and have the opportunity to attend free classes after 6 months. To qualify, you must possess excellent communication and organization skills, be available for at least 10 hours a month and commit to the role for a minimum of 1 year. All the positions are listed below. Interested members can apply by completing this form: http://bit.ly/gdi-lead-volunteer-app. Applications close on April 28, 2014.

Position #1: Volunteer Coordinator
We have a thriving community with members who want to give back - whether they’re students who have advanced their careers as a result of our classes or developers in existing roles that want to change the ratio in tech. As you can imagine, these relationships are a top priority to us as they help us provide a supportive learning environment for members. We are looking for someone who can develop and maintain our recruitment process, respond to potential volunteers, and develop a volunteer appreciation strategy. Responsibilities include:

  • Develop an initiative for assessing GDI volunteers
  • Maintaining volunteer correspondence
  • Adding new volunteers to GDI contact spreadsheet, as well as organizing contacts
  • Developing and executing a volunteer appreciation strategy
  • Establishing a process to recruit volunteers for GDI classes/events

Position #2: GDI Events Coordinator
Networking is a critical part of what we provide to our members and we want to run more consistent project nights and social events so members can meet each other, gain feedback on their projects, and get together for social events. Responsibilities are:

  • Finding locations/space for events
  • Running/coordinating the project nights
  • Discussing potential volunteer candidates with the Volunteer Organizer.
  • Developing a monthly GDI meetup/social with the Lead Volunteer Coordinator

Position #3: Mentoring Program Volunteer
Last summer we launched our mentoring program pilot. Due to it’s success, all four women who participated now have jobs in tech, we are preparing to launch another. We need assistance developing, guiding and building the mentoring program through it’s infancy. Responsibilities include:

  • Plan & develop a course model with the mentoring team
  • Help recruit Instructors or special guests to participate in the mission
  • Recruit volunteers/volunteer to assist mentees on their journey
  • Assess potential applicants with mentoring team

Last but not least, we're looking for a senior developer to help us run an apprenticeship program and someone to organize our very own GDI Toastmasters group. If you're interested, check out our Discussions page.

Congratulations Ashley!
I have had the honor and pleasure to get to know Ashley over the last year and a half. She is the perfect woman to assume this role. Ashley, you are awesome, congrats! :)
