Intro to Data Modeling

This class is an introduction to help you get acquainted with storing information. It is taughtby Liz Howard. Liz is a Teacher at Girl Develop It and a Professor at Hackbright Academy.  She's been coding for many years, and really loves to teach. If you're interested in helping out as a teaching assistant, please let us know.

What is Data Modeling?

When we talk about modeling data we're talking about representing an object, be it a real or virtual object, by saving information about it. Creating accurate data models is harder than it sounds, and it has serious implications on what you can do with your software. Starting off with the right model can empower you, and that's what this class is about.

What is covered in this class?

In this three hour workshop, we'll be talking about how to represent real-world objects (like books, people, products) and abstract items (like metadata about a user, or a website, or an action) and doing a few excercises.

What do I need to attend?

NO programming experience is required, and this class is helpful for Programmers, Product Managers and anyone who has an interest in how information is stored.

You will need a laptop, and a text editor (not MS Word, something like Sublime Text).

Many thanks to our sponsor Hack Reactor for the wonderful space. Hack Reactor is a 12 week bootcamp for aspiring developers in the SF Bay area.

If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, please request a GDI scholarship.

Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there's an overhead to issuing refunds via and we already offer the workshops at such a low-cost. We put proceeds into the chapter fund, which we use as our scholarship fund.

Ugh, I won't be able to make it now due to family reasons. Like someone had posted below, I would love it if I could spend the money on another class - please let me know if that's possible. So bummed out :(

You definitely can apply the money to the next class. Just fill out a scholarship request for the class you want to use it for.

I'm really sad I can't make it tonight, but something personal came up. If I can apply my $ to the next time we have this class, that would so very awesome!

Unfortunately something has come up and I can't make it. Someone should take my spot.

Hi I got a mail saying a spot just opened. How do I confirm?

    June 11, 2013

    • Liz H.

Meetup automatically sends out those emails when a spot opens up. So long as the spot is still open, you sign up just like you normally would. If it won't allow you sign up, the event is full again. Sorry!
