Advanced JS: Intro to Backbone.js

  • Jul 18, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This workshop is an introduction to Backbone.js, a popular front-end javascript library for creating dynamic, interactive web interfaces. It will be taught by Pamela Fox, a product engineer at Coursera.

We'll cover Backbone.JS Models, Views, and Events, with hands-on exercises throughout. As a prerequisite, you should feel comfortable with JavaScript and hopefully have attended our JS MVC/OO workshop.

Thank you to Change.org for providing the great space. We will share the exact address with attendees before the event.

If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, please request a GDI scholarship.

Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there's an overhead to issuing refunds via Meetup.com and we already offer the workshops at such a low-cost. We put proceeds into the chapter fund, which we use as our scholarship fund.

I liked that it was a very guided introduction to a subject that's potentially too intimidating.
Getting the tests to run green was very satisfying.
The exercises were directly related to the examples on slides, so it was easy to apply what we learned to the exercise.
The more I learn these things, though, the more I realize that one cannot just dabble in code and make something cool; one needs to do a deep dive.

If you're coming to tonight's Backbone workshop and you weren't at Tuesday's workshop, I recommend looking over the slides from that one before tonight: http://www.teaching-materials.org/jsmvc/ ...See you soon!

This workshop is the final in our Advanced JS series, so we recommend that you attended those or feel comfortable with the topics in them (OO/MVC in particular, as noted, in the description, but jQuery and AJAX will also be useful).
