JS101: Intro to JavaScript (Self-paced)

  • This location is shown only to members

JavaScript is the programming language that makes web pages interactive, and is now used these days to make servers, robots, and more. That makes it one of the most useful first languages to learn, if you're just getting started with programming, and particularly web development.

In this one-day workshop, we will try out a new self-paced format. We'll start with a round of introductions and an overview of JS, and then you'll watch videos and do challenges at your own pace, using Khan Academy. We will be there to answer questions and help you out throughout the day, and we'll take breaks for lunch (provided), snacks, and socializing.

This workshop is targeted at complete beginners to programming and will cover variables, functions, logic, loops, arrays, and objects. If you already know another language, you're welcome to come, you'll probably just find that you work at a faster pace (you're welcome to TA if you finish early!).

If you are interested in being a teaching assistant for this workshop, please let us know. TAing is a great way to practice what you know and to get to know members of our community.

Please bring your laptop, charger, and headphones. If you don't have any of those, please let us know.

Thank you to Edmodo for the great location!

If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, please request a GDI scholarship.

Please note that we cannot issue refunds, since there's an overhead to issuing refunds via Meetup.com and we already offer the workshops at such a low-cost. We put proceeds into the chapter fund, which we use as our scholarship fund.

Note: The San Mateo caltrain is very close to the Edmodo office, so you can take that if you're coming from the city. There's an 8:15 that gets in at 8:49 and a 9:15 that gets in at 9:49. I'll be on that first one, but the second one would be fine timing. We'll start more around 10.

I also live in the area and can help TA in the afternoon if you need coverage. (Took this class last year) Also a note for SF people that Caltrain San Mateo station drops right there.

I'm having trouble RSPVing as well. It says there's 1 spot left but when I go through the process, the system says no spots available.

A note on parking from Edmodo,: There are two city parking garages available nearby. Please bring either coins or one-dollar bills with you, as the meters do not accept credit cards. The entrance to the closest parking structure is located on San Mateo Drive, between 3rd and 4th Avenue. The second structure is on 2nd Avenue at El Camino Real. There is also street parking on 3rd Ave. Payment for parking is on Saturday only, parking is free on Sundays. Parking is $0.25/hour. There is also a bike rack in the back of the building.

Hi, as a person with NO background in Javascript or coding at all, would it be pointless to sign up and attend?

    October 23, 2013

    • zhongL1

Oh, and I read that this is "for complete beginners" but I would really like to know if this is a good class to start with. Thanks!

This is appropriate for complete beginners, yes.

Looking forward to attending. You suggested we let you know if we'll need headphones - I do. Also, doing a breast cancer walk early in the am that day; I suspect I will be late. Since it's self-paced, I assume it will not be a problem. Thank you!

@Robin, yes its fine for you to come late. We'll have headphones. See you there!

Hi! Do you need to know HTML/CSS well to do this course?

    October 21, 2013

    • pamelafox

@Alina - For JS 101 (this workshop), no HTML/CSS knowledge is needed. For JS 200 on Sunday, some is expected.
