JS101: Intro to JavaScript (Self-paced)

  • Jun 21, 2014 · 11:45 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

JavaScript is the programming language that makes web pages interactive, and is now used these days to make servers, robots, and more. That makes it one of the most useful first languages to learn, if you're just getting started with programming, and particularly web development.

This two-day workshop will be largely "self-paced". That means that we'll start with a round of introductions and an overview of JS, and then you'll watch videos and do challenges at your own pace, using Khan Academy. We will be there to answer questions and help you out throughout the day, and we'll take breaks for lunch (provided), snacks, and socializing.

We will go from 11:45am to 6:30pm on both Saturday and Sunday, and each day will start with catered lunch.

This workshop is targeted at beginners to programming and will cover variables, functions, logic, loops, arrays, and objects. If you already know another language, you're welcome to come, you'll probably just find that you work at a faster pace.

If you are interested in being a teaching assistant for this workshop, please let us know. TAing is a great way to practice what you know and to get to know members of our community.

Please bring your laptop, charger, and headphones. If you don't have any of those, please let us know.

Thank you to Mozilla for the great location!

This workshop is half the normal rate due to there being no instructor, and proceeds from this workshop will go back to our chapter fund.

If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, please request a GDI scholarship.

Thanks for an awesome weekend! What a great class! On my way home I couldn't help but think how I could code everything I could see around me (well, ok, mainly BART to be more efficient)!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it this weekend because of an urgent work project that cropped up. I hope to join some future classes soon. Have fun, everyone!

Sorry if this is written somewhere else-- are we required/expected to bring our own computers or will we be in some sort of lab?

An email went out today and it might be in the event description. Bring your computer, a charger, and a set of earphones.

See you all tomorrow. I almost couldn't get Khanacademy to work on my outdated mac[masked] laptop but Safari seems to work. Thank goodness.

Hi there, I am trying to sign up and pay, but I am having trouble as I only have a temporary credit card (had fraud on my card yesterday and am awaiting an official replacement). Is there a way to RSVP without paying? I can make payment before the training date. Thanks and sorry for any inconvenience!
