Multimedia in HTML5

Back in the old days of the web, web developers had to use closed technologies like Flash or Quicktime to embed video and audio on their webpages. Now, thanks to HTML5 and the support of modern browsers, we can use HTML tags and JavaScript instead. We'll talk all about that in this class, plus do a few hands-on exercises.

The course will be taught by Pamela Fox, a frontend developer for Coursera. If you're interested in helping out as a teaching assistant, please let us know.

We will be using the pairing stations provided by our host for the workshop, so you only need to bring your laptop if you want to follow along with the slides.

As a prerequisite, you should have some familiarity with HTML and JavaScript.

Thank you to our sponsor Catalyst Class, the SF immersion school for frontend web development.

If you'd like to attend but cannot afford the cost, please request a GDI scholarship.

This workshop sounds great. I just can't seem to sync up my schedule to attend. Will any of these wonderful workshops ever be available online via Google hangout, Skype, or some virtual classroom?

Hi Ana - I typically put all my materials online after, but I haven't arranged video recording of the workshops. But, hey, I work for Coursera, so perhaps I'll just use our equipment/platform one day and do it. :)

I have a scheduling conflict and have already paid. It says refunds aren't available, can I put the $ toward a future workshop?

    Thanks!

Val, sure, just email me when you see the future workshop you're interested in.

Hi Pam: Can you give more details on what you'll teach so I can tell whether it's things I already know or not? Thanks!

Joanne, We'll be talking about audio and video codecs and compression techniques, the video APIs like setPlaybackRate, fallback techniques, and libraries that make them easier to use.
