a look back at 2011 and forward to 2012

A former member
Hi everyone!

I don't normally send emails via MeetUp but wanted to shoot a note to let everyone know what's going on in our world. :) I'm basically sending you a copy of what was sent out to the GGD PHL Announcement list earlier this week. If you're not on it and are interested, visit www.ggdphl.com and sign up. (Basically, it's an email that goes out once every week or so with things we think you might be interested in...)

Quickly, we want to call out a Twitter contest that one of the local groups, GirlDevelopIt, is running for free entry into her upcoming WordPress 4-class series. If you're interested, take a look at this tweet (but do it before 5PM ET!)

Without further ado...

GGD PHL UPDATES
Quick Recap of 2011
2011 exceeded our expectations in every way. You all are amazing and wonderful! So what did we do in 2011? Let's see... we had 3 successful dinners, formed a social committee that has organized 3 happy hours and 1 happy hour-karaoke night, spoke at Ignite Philly 8, received a lot of great coverage from the community, meet loads of wonderful women, Philadelphia-ized the GGD logo thanks to Melissa at Operation NICE, and made wonderful friendships and connections with other women-in-tech groups in the city. Also, you can check out our Town Hall meeting recap (FINALLY): http://bit.ly/wehH59

We can't thank you all enough for how great you made 2011 and are looking forward to what 2012 will bring!

Organizer Meeting
The GGD PHL organizers will be meeting next week to begin planning out 2012. If you have an idea for something you think we should do (or you'd like to organizer for the group!), please contact us at info[at]ggdphl[dot]com.

January Social: Girl Geek Dinners Philadelphia's first highT(ech) Event - SAVE THE DATE
In what will hopefully be the first of many events, Girl Geek Dinners Philadelphia is hosting the first "highT(ech)," featuring talks, tea, and community. We are working to determine a date but we will feature three PhD students speaking on their fascinating research in the wonderful world of technology. The best part? Before/between talks we have a full dinner (and tea and coffee after!) brought to you by Miss Rachel's Pantry.

Date: TBD
Where: IndyHall (20 N 3rd St)
How much?: Contact pamela.selle@gmail.com if you'd like to help sponsor the event to lower cost!

Encore Presentation of GGD PHL #3
Due to the popularity -- and how quickly the event sold out! -- Girl Geek Dinners Philadelphia is excited to work with Web Start Women to organize an encore presentation of Jessica Ivins' "On 'Shrink It & Pink It': Designing Experiences for Women," hosted by Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC.

Because of the overwhelming response to the November event and the number of people who were waitlisted, RSVP for the encore presentation will work as such:

  • thru Sunday, January 15 - priority RSVP opportunity for those who were on the wait list for the November event
  • Monday, January 16 (mid afternoon) - remaining seats will open to general public until sold out

OTHER HAPPENINGS
January 14: IGDA Philadelphia January Chapter Meeting
We all want to create our own vision of what gaming is and can be. As development is rarely a solo endeavor, it becomes necessary to seek the help of others, from close friends, to partners near and far. In telling the story of XenoCube's development, we will discuss the duality of working as an outsource studio, developing in Unity3D, and the perils of falling in love with someone else's dream.
