this is a round trip 7 mile hike. we'll hike to the nike missile site and break for lunch and then hike back to our cars.
i will break this group into 2 groups. one for those who want a easy - moderate hike on the fire roads and one for those who want more of a rigorous work out (up and down the hills along side of the fire roads). but during the hike you're more than welcome to switch. as the trails always meet several times.
we'll get great work out, meet new friends and see a piece of history.
In the 1950s, San Vicente Mountain was used to defend Los Angeles from soviet missile attacks. Like Mt. Disaapointment in the San Gabriel Mountains and White Poing on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, San Vicente Mountain was used as a Nike missile defense site to detect and intersect missiles directed at Los Angeles. After a decade, Nike missiles were made obsolete by long-range technology, but the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy has done an excellent job preserving this old site, adding informative panels to keep this history alive.
