Constructed in 1799 as a carriage house and converted into a hotel in 1826, the Museum transports the visitor back to the Mount Vernon Hotel, a country escape for New Yorkers living in the crowded city at the southern tip of Manhattan. As you wander through the eight period rooms, music of the pianoforte floats out of the Ladies' Double Parlors and the scent of lavender fills the air.
In the Gentlemen's Tavern Room, feel free to take a seat, read a newspaper from 1828 and talk about the politics of the day. Next, you'll hear stories of the well-to-do guests sipping turtle soup in the Lower Hall as tensions boil over in the Kitchen between the Irish and African-American hired help.
Your tour ends with a relaxing stroll through the Museum's 18th Century gardens.
