Mount Vernon Hotel Museum & Garden followed by a Japanese Luncheon

Constructed in 1799 as a carriage house and converted into a hotel in 1826, the Museum transports the visitor back to the Mount Vernon Hotel, a country escape for New Yorkers living in the crowded city at the southern tip of Manhattan. As you wander through the eight period rooms, music of the pianoforte floats out of the Ladies' Double Parlors and the scent of lavender fills the air.

In the Gentlemen's Tavern Room, feel free to take a seat, read a newspaper from 1828 and talk about the politics of the day.  Next, you'll hear stories of the well-to-do guests sipping turtle soup in the Lower Hall as tensions boil over in the Kitchen between the Irish and African-American hired help.

Your tour ends with a relaxing stroll through the Museum's 18th Century gardens.

Thanks to Ivy, I had the opportunity to discover and explore The Mount Vernon Hotel and Museum, a historical gem in our city. The tour was so informative and the building and furnishings so impressive.
The Japanese restaurant was conveniently located and delicious and it's always pleasant to have lunch and chat with the warm and friendly members of this group.

Yes, Ivy. I second Avia. Your wonderful in all you do for us. If I see you all, it'll be my pleasure, too.

    • Ivy

Thanks Andrea. The Director knows how much everyone wants to go so she is trying really hard to make us all happy. I will let you know as soon as I know. Then I just have to worry about lunch. (LOL)

    Hi Ivy:

Thank you in advance for trying to arrange a second tour. I definitely will keep the date open. Hope it works out for all involved! I appreciate all your effort.

    • Ivy

Thanks ao much for your support, Abby. I think we will probably get to do it. She has an email out to all the staff to see if someone will come aboard that day for us. She is really trying hard to accommodate our group. Let's hope it all works out. :-)

      April 3, 2013

  • Ivy

I spoke to the Director today and she is still trying to get an extra 'interpreter' for us so a second group can go to the museum. She will contact me as soon as she knows. So ladies, keep the 13th open if you would like to go. If you know NOW that you cannot go, please take yourself OFF the waiting list to avoid confusion if I have to create a second group. Thank you.

  • Jill Mullen

So sorry. I already have plans. Hope someone else on waiting list can go

    March 29, 2013

  • Ivy

FYI: I am trying to arrange a second meetup for the ladies on the waiting list for the same day, similar to what I did with Forbes.

The Director will be getting back to me sometime next week, since there is another event that day and they have to see that an 'interpreter' would be available for us. If the answer is yes, I would still have to arrange lunch after the tour.

I will let you know as soon as I know.

A dollar off if you go as a senior! ~wink~

    March 25, 2013

    • Ivy

I posted the admission costs above. Not sure what the age is for a senior, however, since we are bringing a group I think I can get them to charge everyone $7. I will ask the Director when I call to confirm the count. Thanks Andrea.

This sounds great - I know wait list is long but hope I can still go or as you said maybe the group will go again.

    February 23, 2013

  • Ivy

Great News! I finally reached the Director of Programming and she is allowing us to increase our group to 20 ladies! If more 'interpreters' are available, we may be able to split up into 2 groups. Right now the other docents are taken but things may change as the date approaches. A couple of the rooms are small so 20 may be a bit much, but she was very nice and said if we are flexible, then she will be also.

For those on the waiting list, we can go back again on another date. They are also having public programs there including concerts so we may be back there before you know it.

As the date approaches, people always drop out. Ladies, because the waiting list is so long, please be considerate. If you know that you will not be able to attend, please CHANGE YOUR RSVP right away to allow other members to go.

    Thank you.

    February 22, 2013

  • Ivy

Thanks Michelle for your comments. It's great to hear that you like all the meetups that I plan. I put a lot of effort and time in each and everyone. As the time gets closer to the event, I am sure the waiting list will get a lot shorter as people tend to drop out as the event gets closer. If I see that a lot of people are still waiting, I may be able to have everyone come, but walk in as two separate groups so as to not cause a problem with the venue. Not sure if the restaurant can accommodate so many ladies, but I promise to get as many people to go as we draw closer to the date.
