Brunch at Knickerbocker & Forbes Galleries - Jewelry in the Space Age

Knickerbocker Bar & Grill, located in the heart of Greenwich village, is a neighborhood favorite. Established in 1977, its popularity has grown over the years, due to its moderate prices and large portions.

Its wood paneled walls sport a wonderful collection of memorabilia with a New York state of mind. Pieces range from rare turn of the century posters to original caricatures by Al Hirschfield. Large leather booths line the walls and brass rails accent the 100 year old marble bar, where Charles Lindbergh signed his contract to fly across the Atlantic.

Knickerbocker is known for its great Jazz and its 28 oz. T- Bone Steaks, and is a favorite among many celebrities. In recent articles, F. Murray Abraham and Ben Stiller mentioned it as among their favorite. Rachel Ray, from The Food network, has on several occasions praised our Shrimp Cocktail, Creamed Spinach and of course our T- Bone Steaks. Other frequent celebrities include Chris Noth, Josh Charles, Richard Gere, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Jane Curtain and Paul Sorvino, cast and crew of  "The Good Wife."

Out of this World! Jewelry in the Space Age - Depictions of bodies in outer space have appeared in jewelry since ancient times. The influence of the space race beginning in the late 1950s had a major impact on jewelry design and continues to do so today.

Tampa Necklace. Van Cleef & Arpels

This exhibition will trace space images in jewelry from the Georgian period through today and will include fine and costume jewelry from the 1960s through the present, jewelry being made by contemporary studio artists influenced by space, jewelry made from materials created by NASA for space exploration, jewelry with materials that came from space and jewelry flown in space by astronauts and more.

The purpose of this exhibition is to document how the history of space exploration has been reflected in our popular culture through both fine and non-precious jewelry and to showcase the beautiful and whimsical jewels that are being crafted today as jewelers continue to ponder the mysteries of the universe.

***Fortunately, we will be given a tour by the curator of the exhibit, Elyse Zorn Karlin, who is also the Co-Director of the Association for the Study of Jewelry & Related Arts.

-----------------------------------------------------

If we have time, there is another new exhibit at the gallery:

This exhibition features the poetry of Robert Forbes and the drawings of Ronald Searle, featured in three books, BEASTLY FEASTS! A Mischievous Menagerie in Rhyme; LET’S HAVE A BITE! A Banquet of Beastly Rhymes, and the latest, BEAST FRIENDS FOREVER! Animal Lovers in Rhyme.

Robert Forbes writes:

All the drawings are done by the great Ronald Searle, and I think you will agree that they bring magic to the poems. When I first had enough poems to think about doing a book, I asked myself, who is the top, who is the best illustrator I could possibly get to do these? The answer for me was Ronald Searle, so I just asked. I have learned in life that if you don’t try, you will never know what could have been.

I am very grateful to him for interpreting all my creatures so brilliantly, with such zest and wit. By the way, if you look closely at each drawing you will see a mouse who shows up in every one! See if you can spot him.

How does a book like this come together? What I did was write a bunch of poems and then I send them to Ronald.

A few months later, a large package arrives. I felt like a little boy at Christmas opening a highly anticipated present! Imagine my delight and wonder as my creatures sprang to life under his pens and inks, pastels and paints.

This should be a lovely meetup. I hope you can join us for the gallery and lunch.

The pictures are so nice to remember our experience, Ivy. This is what coming to Meetup is all about. The company should be aware about your presentation to the audience. You made it wonderful for all of us. Thank you.

I think the pictures of everyone came out very nice. Since I wasn't able to take photos of the exhibit, I am happy that I was able to download pictures of the jewelry from the internet.

Ahh, wonder if we can get an invite to the jewelers on Fifth? I went to Cartiers cocktail party once. Found an invite no one wanted. Extravagance, thou name is Cartier. Sometimes I wish I was a Hilton.

Knickerbocker has a unique selection and was very good. The jewelry in the space age at Forbes Galleries was a lesson in history and the subsequent interpretation through jewelry.
