WXPN radio telethon

  • February 9, 2014 · 10:45 AM

WXPN 88.5 is the non-commercial, member-supported radio service of the University of Pennsylvania and  the premier guide for discovering new and significant artists in rock, blues, roots, and folk.

This station depends on membership support, and several times per years holds week-long fundraising telethons. We're going to help with the Winter 2014 telethon by answering phones and taking pledges over the phone. No previous experience necessary.

I've done this before, and it's fun (though sometimes slow). The radio DJ usually broadcasts live from the volunteer room.

Details:

• Our shift is 11am - 2pm, but they ask that all volunteers arrive 10-15 mins early.

• Meet in the lobby of WXPN (inside the entrance of World Cafe Live).

• We will be answering phones and taking pledges. We will be "trained" on site (it's not hard, I promise).

• Lunch will be available for volunteers (probably pizza).

• Public transportation: this location is only 3 blocks from 30th Street Station.

• If you are driving, here's a link to to parking info for World Cafe Live: http://philly.worldcafelive.com/info/parking.html There is also a World Cafe Live parking lot (under the building) which is usually free on weekends. There are also parking meters all around, not sure if Sunday is free parking or not.

Great meetup event. This was my first time doing a telethon and I am thankful for the experience. WXPN was very encouraging and was able to walk you thru the process. Everyone there was pleasant to be around. And of course Jan, our organizer, was awesome!

Was a fun experience ... not terribly busy with calls during our shift, but still interesting. Thanks to all who attended!

Bad weather is a definite possibility for this event. Please decide by Friday if you want to cancel so that I can give a new headcount to WXPN an they can find others to fill our spots. Thanks!

Hate to do it, but between forecast and a special Spanish service at church (last minute), I'm bailing.
    Hopefully, next time 'round!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
