The Taxing Question of Land

Our fiscal system is in need of serious and sincere reform and revision. The UK borrows a third of its annual budget and the revenue raised for the remaining two thirds is secured from taxes on our economy, all while expecting growth in this area.

At this meeting of our Land Justice Group we will show the film "The Taxing Question of Land” which shows how land value tax, or LVT, offers a best of both worlds approach, generating government revenue without taxing economic growth. In the backdrop of international financial crisis, many feel that LVT is an idea whose time has come.

"The Taxing Question of Land" is a film that was made by people donating funds through crowd sourcing. It is now complete and it is a project that aims to create an easy to understand, entertaining, punchy and engaging documentary that brings Land Value Tax to life. The film explores whether the introduction of a land value tax could be a viable and responsible alternative to our fiscal system, which is universally agreed to be inefficient.

This film will be followed by a discussion led by Christiana Fatoki the founder and CEO of Visionnaire Consulting a Social Enterprise that promotes Ethical Financial Advice who uses their profits to provide Financial Education to support hard to reach communities. Christiana appears in the film and will take us through some of the arguments and views expressed in the film.

You may remember I mentioned Citizens Income Trust. Quite by chance I was handed their booklet, 'A brief introduction', yesterday. I recommend you to look at www.citizensincome,org. On p4 of the booklet it mentions "the viability if a Citizen's income funded by Income Tax, but it could also be part of a wider tax-reform passage including, for example, a land value tax and/or a carbon tax."

I thought the meeting was slightly over shadowed by just a few contributors who though very knowledgeable on the topic had far too much to say without giving others the platform to really exercise there views and let it be a real group discussion.

In future meetings this needs to be better controlled so that there is a more even spread of group participation.

In spite of this I really enjoyed the discussion as it is not a topic
that I knew anything about previously so it was good to hear all the views and to be aware of a new possibility that could have a very positive effect on society if adopted in the right way.

Still a lot of discussion required to formulate a cohesive strategy that is workable but definitely worth exploring.

The Harrisburg model looks like one to explore further.

Looks like I've caught up with your message after the event, Dave. So apologies for that, but we met up anyway.

Interesting, if seemingly deeply flawed through failure to consider costs and transfer strategy. And quoted active cases seemingly small local affairs (some of which died) and not the full-on national activity promoted. The difference between "Bright idea" (maybe) and worked out plan of execution is substantial, and this concept has yet to leave the starting blocks so far as I can see. As the total take has to be the same, this is effectively a transfer of cost, which creates winners and losers, with a myriad of unanswered questions.

In hospital for radiography treatment that day, (actually, each day that week....) so attendance at this - which really does interest me - is slightly dependent on getting out in time, and not being too badly knocked about....
