Saturday Forum - Belonging & Identity

Our next Saturday Forum on Identity & Belonging will take place on Saturday March 15th at 12.30pm

This month we will talk about FASHION and identity!

• Why is there a hipster uniform

• What are you trying to say by your appearance?

• How does your clothing choice mark your identity?

• Is there such a thing as non-conformist clothing?

The clothes and accessories we wear serve as labels of the kind of people we are and the "tribes" to which we belong.

Special guest speaker, fashion executive Miriam Lahage, will get us started!

Dress "appropriately"!!

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Saturday Forum provides space for dialogue around issues of identity, where people can engage with each other in an exchange of ideas, points of view and personal experiences. Our purpose is not to decide who is right and who is wrong, but rather to move forward together in a more nuanced understanding of complex issues.

You Will Need To Pay Your Annual Subscription to Attend

Although membership of our site is free we do expect all those who attend our events to pay an annual subscription that covers attendance not just one meeting but also to the vast majority of our meetups and webinars for any one year. It also allows you to bring one guest free to every meeting or webinar.

If you are unable to pay online this way can you please let us know and we will make other arrangements. Also we never refuse membership to anyone who is unable to pay, so do please let us know if there are difficulties this way and you will still be able to join in.

This will be an interesting discussion. It's hard not to have a part of your identity bound so closely to what you do for a (paid) living as it often occupies a large part of our daily life if working full time . Does it really tell people who we are though. Do the identity traits cone before the job or does the job encourage particular traits? How often are we 'ranked' by profession? Or judged? How many times have we met new people and one of the first questions is 'what do you do for a living?' One of my friends took to saying he designed cookies rather than say the truth (global assets in banking) just to have an easier time with less stereotypical judgements about him from the start. Extreme but true :-)

The next meeting will be on identity and work/employment. How does "who we are" change when we have an answer to "what do you do?"

How does it change when we retire?

Is losing a job akin to losing an identity?

Important topic considering we are living longer and will have many years when we are not contributing to the economy. In today's world everything is defined by money so the thought of evaluating ourselves without it seems daunting to me.I read a article recently which stated that young people nowadays are working part time in traditional professionals and using the rest of their time to do what they feel fulfils their purpose in life .Perhaps this is a better model? What does everybody think?

Sorry I have had to pull out of this (and subsequent events for the time-being). A pity as fashion and identity is a topic that interests me greatly. Just have too much on my plate right now and something has had to give :(

I'm sadly only 60/40 rsvp'd. Really interested in this discussion and I missed the opportunity to see this...

which I think would have been interesting.
I'm regularly intrigued by the "don't judge the book by the cover" philosophy which I think is a cop out for people who are scared of harsh truths

don't tar all with the same brush, sure, but there are very good reasons why books have covers :-)

Hi! We're going to have some fun this month talking about fashion!

I'd love to have some more folks helping with this series by facilitating, planning, checking lists, etc. Send me a note if you're interested. We'll have a 20 minute conversation after the session for anyone interested in helping.

...I've made some striking positive changes in my life future plans since, as a direct result. So my aim is now to do my best to share that knowledge where I can. End!

oh - and could somebody kindly remind me herein what the annual subs are pls - forgot to take that into account too and has a direct bearing on the same problem.
Not an issue, happy to pay, if I have the money.
No money - no honey, fair enough. and if I don't pay this time it will be the 3rd globalnet21 thingy that I've not contributed to and I'm not comfortable with that and would rather pay or just not attend if I can't pay - pride thing!? does it come before a fall/fool; is it really a sin? ;-) don't care, I've got it and I'm proud of it ;-$

    ...missed a bit...
60/40 due to travel funds issue arising post my confirmation herein - which with a bit of luck by Friday may be resolved but if not, I will "un reg" my attendance intend-ance ;-)

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
