Women & Empowerment Planning Meeting

Following a successful first meeting for the Women's empowerment group, this meeting is being held to plan events to further address the issues raised in the first meeting, (see below for topics raised). During this meeting we will be discussing the order, timing, format and content of events. We will also consider which social and networking platforms we can use to raise awareness of these topics and which organizations we could potentially work with

This meeting is an opportunity to join the group and raise your topic of discussion, if you missed the first meeting.

Topics to be further discussed in this meeting include:

• Empowering women starting up social enterprises

• Violence against women living on the street.

• Gender discrimination against Women in employment.

• Cultural and social barriers preventing women from attaining their individuality and complete freedom, to choose how they wish to live their lives.

You Will Need To Pay Your Annual Subscription to Attend

Although membership of our site is free we do expect all those who attend our events to pay an annual subscription that covers attendance not just one meeting but also to the vast majority of our meetups and webinars for any one year. It also allows you to bring one guest free to every meeting or webinar.

If you are unable to pay online this way can you please let us know and we will make other arrangements. Also we never refuse membership to anyone who is unable to pay, so do please let us know if there are difficulties this way and you will still be able to join in.

I think one of the big added values this group can bring to any issue it deals with and which could be a common thread running through its events as Anne suggested, is being able to showcase why personal issues are political, and that more needs to be done to ensure that women are supported and protected. Bringing gender issues into the public sphere and emphasising why the 'personal is political' can be a positive way of truly empowering women beyond attending a meeting, as we discussed during our group meeting. This approach could also be a good way of ensuring that men are included in these progressive discussions too. Be interested to hear your thoughts and look forward to the next meeting.

    Best wishes, Andrea

    Dear All,

It was good meeting you on Monday evening and I came away feeling energised and excited by the possibility of what the group might achieve!

Ahead of the meeting preparations on the issue of domestic violence, I thought you might find this article useful in helping to contextualise the problem at the EU level. It also highlights how much public resources is spent on tackling this problem and why it demands a comprehensive political response:

Thanks to all those who went to the meeting last night and overcoming the last minute panic over the actual meeting place. Sharn was really calm despite the small crisis but it seemed to go well and looks as it there was a great start to what could be an interesting and important group.

Thanks Sharn for organising this meeting. A really good start and great ideas. I really hope more people will join this - there really is something for everyone. Inspire, be inspired, learn, discuss, debate, challenge, be challenged, develop, build, grow and be truly empowered! Looking fwd to future meetings.

Hi all, not sure if I'll be able to make it tomorrow, first day back from leave at work and last day of the charity's financial year, could be rather busy....
I'd like to add treatment of women fleeing persecution to the list of topics. I work with the London Refugee Women's Forum - they'd probably be up for a joint meeting :)
