Tackling Crime Through Rehabilitation

Following our meeting on July 14th on gang culture and violence, we are following it up with a meeting with Only Connect at their premises to look at crime, offending and rehabilitation.

Laura Chinnery, the Policy & Research Fellow from Only Connect will give us an overview of the organisation and its approach to rehabilitation.

This will be followed by a short drama about the typical OC client - or 'member' as they are called - and his/her pathway through our programmes of support and change.

An old-time member and now employee - Andrew Brown - will lead the performance.  Senior staff from our prison programme ('OC Inspire'), drop-in centre ('OC Central') and creative-arts project (OC Create) will contribute - providing insight into OC's multi-leveled approach to prisoners, ex-offenders and young people at risk

Only Connect is a crime prevention charity providing a positive community – including training, support and creative opportunities – for young people at risk and ex offenders. Their programmes deliver support at every point in the crime cycle in order to reduce offending. They see people they work with as assets, not liabilities, with a contribution to make to their families, communities and wider society.

I think OC are doing a good job in getting those vulnerable to committing crime or those having been through the criminal justice system out of self and victimhood and into pro-social action.

A fascinating evening and good to see Only Connect's inter-personal approach what can be an intractable issue, placing value on the self and its potential for transformation.

Interesting presentation by clearly committed and capable people. Some case studies would have been an added benefit. But interesting to learn more of what they do.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
