HOUSE MEETING - 21st Century - A New Age Of Enlightenment Or Darkness?

  • September 20, 2012 · 7:00 PM

At this House meeting Kathryn Best will lead us in a discussion of what it means to be a 21st century citizen.

What does it mean to be an enlightened citizen in the present age, and are we indeed entering a new age of enlightenment or one of darkness.

The Enlightenment is a philosophical movement of the 18th century, characterised by belief in the power of human reason and by innovations in political, religious, and educational doctrine. The Enlightenment flourished until about 1790–1800, after which the emphasis on reason gave way to Romanticism's emphasis on emotion.

Today the spirit of The Enlightenment is also being challenged as reason alone has not created an enlightened society.

How do we create a new spirit of enlightenment in the 21st century which is a ‘practical’ movement characterised by belief in the power of human sovereignty and by innovations in political, religious, and educational doctrine.

Enlightenment has always been about breaking free of the restrictions of the mind, the belief structures that we have created based on our judgements of the results of past events. Today we need to do that more than ever but how - especially in an age when there are new dark forces challenging this process. It is this that we hope to discuss at this House Meeting.

Kathryn Best is a writer, speaker, educator and consultant in design and the creative industries, and the author of 2 books on Design Management. Her new book on design and systemic change is due out in late 2012.

Please note this is a House Meeting and the venue will be sent out to all those wanting to attend at a later date.

Although membership of our site is free we do expect all those who attend our events to pay a subscription of £10 for a whole year that covers attendance not just to one meeting but also to the vast majority of our meetups and webinars for any one year. "Enlightenment cannot be described, only experienced."
    ~The Buddha.
..So are we going to be facilitated through some experiences? Or will this be a purely philosophical dialogue?

Words do not teach at all. It is life experience that brings you your
knowing. But when you hear words that are a vibrational match to the
knowing that you have accumulated, then sometimes it's easier for you to
sort it all out. --- Abraham

Only this morning - I watched a VERY powerful clip of Abraham. Thanks for posting this, Kathryn - look forward to seeing you, this evening...

Hi - I'm coming this evening. And would love to now bring a guest, Hetty Einzig... and am not sure how to do that. Also - another friend, Diane Kutz, has recently become a full member (in the last week) - and would also like to come. (She thought it was full & is now in town & not at a PC). Is there are any way to get confirmation of their places. (Sorry to fill this thread with such adminny stuff!)

I am looking forward to seeing you all tonight. Perhaps, picking up on the criteria for enlightenment/enlightened society, you could reflect on the following before coming: what does (or what will) an enlightened society look and feel and be like ?

On the other hand, we enjoy individual rights more than ever before. Women, as the biggest marginalized group on the planet, are getting empowered ( on different scale) almost everywhere. Also, New Age spiritual movements are breaking free from old religious dogmas, incorporating mystical teachings from world religions and some scientific discoveries.

These were just a few ideas about this controversial subject.

    Hi,
This was an interesting conversation so far, but we still don't know what are criterias for a New Age of Enlightenment. Is one of them secularisation? There are many countries today were government and church work (too) closely for "the higest good".
It seems we're not religious any more- yet we're religious about science or political ideology... How about slavery /human traficking in today's world where are involved 10-30 million people?

I am looking forward to this meeting very much. From what we are seeing now most of the world leaders have failed us as they are too interested in conflict and not enough dialogue. There is deep mistrust between the different people that makes up the human race. Only we as citizens can help make a positive difference by contacting our local and national leaders to help make the changes that they have failed to bring to our new age in this young and new century.

Breaking free of the belief structures that we have created would provide a gateway to a new Enlightenment and generate a rush to a new age of human creativity and innovation. If a new Enlightenment is to occur, the problems of how to bring people to believing that belief itself is holding us back and then how to facilitate a shift to freedom from belief are problems it's essential to find solutions for.

A sense of urgency is needed too. Those dark forces you touch on Kathryn are looming ever closer...

I've called this the Gonzo Decade - as humanity becomes less humble and more arrogant, so some people seem to be turning their back on science, claiming they know better. Adults should be free to make such choices for themselves, but if they make such choices for their children or their community the consequences can be fatal.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
