What is meant by getting richer?

What is meant by getting richer? Too many people I guess its earning more money so they can by more and more things because that is how they value themselves. But is that really getting richer? Does it really improve people’s quality of life? What if houses were so well insulated that we did not need additional heating? What if appliances were so energy efficient that energy bill were a fraction of what they cost us today.

What is public transport was cheap and a pleasure to use? What if planning laws were used so we did not need to travel to get to the shops, hospitals. What if there were fewer cars on the road so walking was a pleasure, what if food was healthy ? Would if people had peace of mind ? What if people actually helped each other more? What if people cared about human rights throughout the world? Wouldn’t that be making people ricer but in a more meaningful way than having two TV and a nice car?

People now are under such pressure at work etc just to buy things that they don’t really need but are manipulated in thinking they want them . I thing its been shown that most things people buy they hardly use.

Many people spend there lives accumulating material possessions and for what?

In the modern world there are issues of anger, depression as people struggle to achieve. Many people are finding they have achieved but feel discontent. Modern life style is making people ill.

Research shows that twenty minutes a day spent in mindfulness meditation is more effective as reducing depression than expensive drugs, it helps lower blood presser, improves the heart, boost the immune system, reducedes the aging process and physically changes the brain.

So maybe rather than thinking about getting richer so we can buy the latest Ipod we should be more content with what we have got?
