November Humanist Meeting in Glassboro

  • November 12, 2011 · 1:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

We will be discussing our relationship with AHA and NJHN, the New Jersey Humanist Network. It may be best to become a branch of an existing chapter of AHA, American Humanist Association, rather than become a separate chapter. We will also talk about the Holiday Season and the celebration of HumanLight, our annual dinner with entertainment for family and friends. Finally we will discuss the country wide Occupations that are demanding radical changes in our Government because of rampant corruption and corporate kidnapping of our democracy. We are not a political organization but we cannot be afraid to take a strong stand against economic and social injustice.

A great meeting with interesting, committed activists. Really enjoyed meeting enthusiastic people with vision and focus.

This was our 2nd meetup, and we are on our way. We are grateful to Tim and Lisa Ridge for giving us the information we needed to make some important decisions. We decided to be affiliated with New Jersey Humanist Network, and Janice Rael will be our representative at state meetings. We can make this a better world for everybody, not just a few.

Thank you everyone for choosing me to represent our group on the NJHN Board (assuming this passes the NJHN Board today). I'm so glad we have finally gotten a group together for Humanists in Gloucester County.

We were excited to host two important guests from NJHN. The visit by Tim and Lisa Ridge, from Somerset County, was the highlight of our meeting. They explained the various choices regarding our relationship with the New Jersey Humanist Network and AHA. After a quick vote our members unanimously agreed to become an affiliate of NJHN and dues were collected to start our membership immediately. Now we will be listed on their website as well as AHA. We also want to become members of American Atheists to attract more new members. Thanks to Chef Mike (and Suzan) for the pasta salad and to Brenda for the Asian salad, and to Kathie for the beverages. We were having so much fun that the meetup went into overtime for a total of four hours! We decided to have our Humanlight celebration on December 4th with a pot-luck dinner and Janice Rael as speaker, right here in Glassboro. Now we have to find a musical entertainer. Any suggestions? Humanlight is a family event, so be sure and bring the kids!

We look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow. We can talk about all the topics mentioned. We certainly support your group hosting your own HumanLight party in your area (I'm sure Bill and Brenda remember what happens when a blizzard strikes on the day of your event!). And thanks for holding this meeting in the afternoon, so we can sleep in on Saturday morning! ;-)

I don't think Tim and Lisa will be disappointed at all, the NJHN Humanlight Celebration is over 2 hours away from our area. I love the idea of having one for South Jersey. Maybe Lisa can be our first speaker, to tell us about how Humanlight was founded, and how good it is that we bring the Humanist holiday tradition to our own area!

Yes, Humanlight is definately on the agenda. Lisa and Tim will be disappointed but I think we should have our own Humanlight celebration here, and invite South Jersey Humanists and Ocean County Freethinkers. It is basically a buffet dinner with a speaker and some entertainment and a brief but meaningful ceremony. I have a copy of the program from last year's Humanlight as a guide. Perhaps we could have it at our next meeting in December with Janice as speaker and a musician for entertainment.

I saw Michael and Suzan briefly today and we are all so excited about this Saturday's meeting. One thing for our agenda should be to discuss holding our own Humanlight celebration, since NJHN's is 2 hours away. I can't wait to see Lisa and Tim and everyone else so we can go over our ideas!

Saturday, November 12 is fine with us too. We are looking forward to seeing everybody, especially Lisa and Tim. Then they can announce the results the next day at the NJHN meeting. And we can all visit their meeting sometime in the near future...and join them at HumanLight. Bill and Brenda

Maybe we should move our meetings so there is no conflict.

Hi folks! Tim and I would love to attend your meeting and have this discussion, but this is the same day as our monthly meeting in November. I hate to ask, but is there any way to move the meeting to a different Sunday, or perhaps to Saturday, Nov. 12?

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
