  • This location is shown only to members

Special meeting of New Jersey Humanist Network - Gloucester County (Gloucester County Humanists) with Fairton Federal Prison Warden John Shartle who has requested our involvement in a Humanist inmate program. We meet from 1:30pm to 3:30pm on the first Sunday of each month, in Room C of the Gloucester County Library in Mullica Hill, NJ (check board at library entrance for Room location). The meetings are free and open to the public.

Topics vary monthly but this month we are fortunate to have a guest who is concerned with a group of Humanist and Freethought prisoners who have requested our visits. Come and be part of this important discussion.

We discussed having a joint picnic with SJ Humanists in June, but did not yet decide on a date or place. This was our last meeting at the MH Library untill Autumn, but we will meet at the picnic and at other events.

The highlight of the meetup was a visit by Associate Warden Mark Kirby from Fairton Federal Prison, south of Vineland. He explained Warden John Shartle was unable to make it but that he was the one who would be working with us to develope a program of prison visitations for the Humanists and Freethinkers at Fairton. We were greatful for this invitation and look forward to getting started. Mark suggested a tour of the prison, lunch, and a visit with the inmate group in the coming months. A book donation program was discussed and Vince donated 9 books and magazines to the prison library. We are working to set a date, perhaps June 3rd or 10th for this visit and lunch at the prison. Everyone was encouraged to donate Humanist-related books and magazines to the prison library.

An important message from Bill Reitter: "GCH Asked to Provide Humanist Program for Prisoners

The warden of Fairton Federal Prison, in South Jersey, below Vineland, has asked us to provide a Humanist program for inmates who have requested our support and assistance. Other inmates have visits by pastors and ministers but the Freethought population of the prison has requested info about forming a Humanist or Atheist group at Fairton.
