Join us for a Reason Picnic, with South Jersey Humanists

Wilson Lake is a large lake and recreation area for children and adults, located in Clayton, NJ, at Scotland Run Park. There is a nature center and boating with rentals of canoes and kayaks. There is fishing and hiking and a pavillion and restrooms, and a small beach but no swimming. A great place to connect with nature and with each other. Bring a pot-luck lunch. Details are now confirmed with park, SJH and GCH.

The weather was perfect, the food was great, and the kids had a ball. It was wonderful to see everyone, especially new members and their families. The boating was the highlight of the day for many, followed by the tasty dishes prepared by all our participants. No formal meeting was held but there was plenty of time for talking about issues and getting to know each other better. But for me it was all about the kids. They played on the playground and went canoeing on the placid lake...some for the first time. Who says Humanists don't have community and fun? The kids are learning by doing and making new friends. Looking forward to Reason Picnic 2013!

Tim and I will bring some ice, along with assorted chips. Linda's coming with us and made brownies!

I will bring one of my coolers, but I don't have any blue ice blocks frozen. They did just open the new Heritage's on Delsea Drive, if anyone needs to buy ice.

Thanks Greg, if you have an ice chest or cooler, that would help, but don't buy one. Please come early, if you can, and help set up.

By the way, I made zucchini bread muffins for those who don't care for Dunkin Donuts Munchkins.

Stealth wine in unmarked plain packages? Wrapped in $100 bills?

I volunteer to be the last minute gopher. If anything is still needed, call me in the morning and I'll get it on the way. [masked]

So far our great menu includes, pasta salad, potato salad, coldslaw, fruit salad, watermelon, munchkins and beverages...with some surprise items yet to come. We are providing paper plates, cups, utensils, napkins, handiWipes, paper towels, water and ice. We will have signs saying "Reason Picnic" near the parking lot and pavillion. Lunch starts at 11:am but we will be there at 9:am when the boat rentals open, if you want to come early. Bring beach chairs, beachballs, binoculars and walking shoes!

I have the napkins, forks, spoons, knives, tablecloths, and party bead necklaces! I'll see what else I can rustle up for our picnic. Let me know if I should bring BBQ spatula/tongs. There are charcoal grills there.

Definitely bring extra fishing poles, someone may want to try it! The lake is catch-and-release. Lots of people enjoy it.

    Sounds great Tom! Thanks.

I'm not sure what to bring. Maybe some drinks. Water, Diet Soda? I should also bring some sort of fruit. Not sure what else. Anyone averse to me bringing a fishing pole? I can bring a few extras if anyone is interested.

I'm probably bringing some Dunkin Donuts Munchkins to make sure there are enough delicious bites for everyone!

Brend and I went over to Scotland Run and Wilson Lake early this morning to finalize our plans. We are changing the start time to 9:am for those who want to come early and enjoy a full day of fun! We will shortly post a tentative schedule of optional activities for both kids and adults. The canoe and kayak rentals are only $5. Everything esle is free. Please submit your pot-luck items asap so we can plan the menu. Who is bringing dessert? Janice is bringing brownies, right? Mmmmm.

    Gotcha.

    June 14, 2012

  • Bill R.

We will bring some ice and water to share, but everyone has their own tastes for beverages, so each should bring their own. Naturally there will be some sharing.

    June 14, 2012

  • Beth G.

Should we each bring a drink to share too?...or for ourselves? Or will one person be responsible for beverages?

    June 14, 2012

  • Bill R.

You can bring hot or cold dishes, casseroles, veggies, things to grill, corn on the cob, baked beans, salads...come and share your favorite recipies...and beverages, desserts and snacks. Remember: just bring one or two items...and there will be plenty for everyone. Just let us know what you plan to bring. Thanks!

Thanks, Beth! Brenda is bringing fruit salad and watermelon, and Sue is bringing her famous, home made cold slaw. It would be good if everyone posted the items they are bringing here so we don't have too many duplicates. Then, later, I will send out an email listing who is bringing what. Thanks...this is making me hungry!

  • Beth G.

I would like to bring pasta salad. Any objections?

OK, this is now confirmed! The Reason Picnic is on. Scotland Run Park has beautiful Lake Wilson and fishing, boating, hiking, nature observation, picnic tables and grills, a small beach (no swimming), clean restrooms, and a new playground for the kids. Canoes and kayaks can be rented for a small fee. We will be in the small pavillion near the boats and the parking lot. Optional: bring beach chair, fishing rod and binocular. Join us for a fun day: we will have some planned activities.
