From its unremarkable exterior, Pal Joey's really wouldn't warrant a second glance. After all, how many cool bars would one expect to come upon in quiet, neighborly Allied Gardens? But it's Allied Gardens' neighbors who make this little bar a success.

Once a hip hangout for younger and older folks who love listening to the standards, Pal Joey's has moved a smidgen into the present. With cherry-stained woodwork, purple pool tabletops and chandeliers that look like upside-down Tiffany umbrellas, the former dive's reincarnated look can be summed up with two words: casino chic. Still, the new carpet seems to rank as the most appreciated upgrade among those who know that Larry Matranga, the original owner, outfitted the place in the '60s with used rugs he bought off some Vegas casino and never bothered to replace, even when the cement started to show.

Live bands like the Night Shift belt out "Margaritaville" and "American Pie," bringing an energetic neighborhood crowd to the dance floor. One moment, a couple in their 30s might be slow-dancing, and next thing you know, a couple in their 80s has swing-danced its way to dance floor's center.
Old-school cocktails still flow behind the bar, so slide some singles into the jukebox and hang out awhile. Seeing the smiles on old-timers' faces really does make the evening worthwhile.
