Pipes, Pointers and the Possibilities of Go

John Scott will deliver a  casual talk on Google's new flow oriented, systems programming language named "Go".  The talk will emphasis distinguishing characteristics of Go when compared to traditional, Algolish languages such as C/C++, Python, Java and will be most beneficial for experienced programmers with little knowledge of Go.  In other words, the talk will not be a tutorial on Go overall, but will mostly cover what makes Go unique, like channels, slices and cheap concurrency and interfaces. Will also touch on some of the historical and academic inspirations of Go and a brief case study.

Food will be served at 6:30pm.

Howdy all -- If there's interest, I'd be happy to do a quick presentation next time covering the aspects of Go that I've used most recently, e.g., the data race detector ('go test -race'), benchmarking, some modules from the standard library, and integration with external C/C++ libraries via Cgo.

pizza at 6:30pm. building entrance on south side of building, facing colorado blvd and lake cliff tower. guest parking is limited, so you may need to park at grand bank, abutting the lct tower parking lot. ok with bank.

    concierge wil admit you.

lake cliff tower is about half a mile east of methodist hospital on colorado blvd. after exiting highway 35 at colorado, be SURE to go west, towards methodist hospital.

Any preferences for pizza ... veggie, no sausage, etc? I'll be ordering from Eno's or Nova in Bishop Arts.

folks, i have some sad and sudden news. my father passed away. his death will require my immediate and undivided attention for the next few weeks, so i've taken the liberty of rescheduling the may 30 meeting to jun 27, from 7:pm to 9:pm.

i apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to meeting you.

too bad. was looking forward to meeting you. had to pick a date and go live, so to speak. maybe you can do the June talk?

      May 16, 2013

  • Mark F.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Where will the food be served? And, since it says above that food will be served at 6:30 p.m., does that mean that we need to show up at 6:30 p.m.? (Just wondering.)

    May 16, 2013

    • John the S.

yes, food servered at 6:30pm. no, you don't need to show up at 6:30pm. however, food might be gone by 7pm.

end of the month is better. what about a topic? my case study might be a bit heavy for inexperienced go programmers. i have three other folks interested in joining up who are interested in go but have done no go programming, so i'm leaning for intro level talk.

      May 14, 2013

    • Don A.

I can do an entry level talk. Very entry level. I have a tiny back end I deployed to do push messaging for Android.

  • John the S.

las colinas might be a better location than downtown dallas. i can do a first talk on an internal case study on a project using yacc and go. would be fairly technical and very server oriented. i'm interested in go in either mobile environment or web hosting.

    1 · May 13, 2013

  • Don A.

Yeah. Let's get this thing cranked up. I may have a location in Las Colinas if someone can help organize and find speakers. I coordinate the Dallas Google Developer Group and I'd love to see this group take off.

    Let's get this going!
